Chemical Propulsion Architect – GEO/LEO Missions

About the Role

Based in Toulouse, you will lead the architecture, design, and integration of chemical propulsion systems for telecommunications and exploration-class spacecraft. This role spans concept definition through hot‑fire validation and integration into complete satellite platforms.

As a senior member of the propulsion vertical, you will be responsible not only for chemical propulsion but also for ensuring smooth integration with thermal and mechanical subsystems. Your expertise will help shape end‑to‑end propulsion capabilities and, for the right candidate, may evolve into a team leadership role across the propulsion line.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the overall propulsion architecture (propellant choice, feed system, thrusters, tanks, valves, pressurization) for GEO and LEO spacecraft.
  • Develop system‑level requirements and interface control documents (ICDs) to ensure propulsion integrates seamlessly with spacecraft structures, thermal design, and mission operations.
  • Perform trade‑offs between propellant types, feed‑system topologies, and mission performance constraints.
  • Lead supplier engagement for propulsion components; evaluate proposals, manage design reviews, and oversee qualification campaigns.
  • Plan and oversee hot‑fire and environmental tests of propulsion subsystems; ensure compliance with ECSS and safety protocols.
  • Support integration activities during spacecraft AIT campaigns, including fluid line routing, leak testing, and safety procedures.
  • Mentor propulsion engineers and, where appropriate, contribute to building out a cross‑disciplinary team spanning chemical propulsion, electric propulsion, thermal, and mechanical.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in hybrid propulsion, green propellants, and system miniaturization, recommending innovations where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (focus on propulsion).
  • 8–12 years’ experience in spacecraft chemical propulsion system design and integration.
  • Proven track record defining propulsion architectures for GEO/LEO missions or comparable high‑reliability programs.
  • Hands‑on experience with hot‑fire testing, leak checks, and hazardous operations.
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and propellant feed systems.
  • Familiarity with ECSS propulsion standards and spacecraft qualification protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (thermal, mechanical, AIT) and resolve complex interface issues.
  • Fluent in English with excellent technical writing and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with both bipropellant and monopropellant systems; knowledge of green propellants is a plus.
  • Familiarity with electric propulsion systems and/or hybrid propulsion concepts.
  • Background in mechanical/thermal design for spacecraft (to support cross‑domain leadership responsibilities).
  • Experience in startups or smaller organizations where engineers cover both space‑segment and ground‑segment activities.
  • Previous leadership of propulsion teams or multidisciplinary engineering groups.
