The Architectural Outfitting Senior Superintendent provides leadership and expertise to a newbuilding site office, leading various aspects of the detailed design phases, design coordination, and building phases of projects assigned to one site office. The incumbent guides outfitting responsibilities in tight collaboration with shipyard management, designers, and architects to build and deliver high‑quality, brand‑specific ship design concepts on time and on budget. She/he serves as a conduit of information to the site office leader, Design Manager/Director, and key designers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads, tracks, and upholds the overall outfitting processes on site for all assigned areas, delivering brand‑specific vessel interior, exterior and back‑of‑house designs in accordance with design intent concepts and shipyard contracts.
  • Responsible for guest interior areas, open decks, guest stateroom accommodations, exterior appearance, and ship’s profile; not responsible for technical areas such as machinery, casings, or HVAC rooms.
  • Controls and coordinates eventual modifications within these areas, prepares modification requests, and coordinates with the Manager, Architectural Outfitting, or Project Manager/Director.
  • Organizes planning of architecture, lighting, catering, artwork, and signage coordination meetings, visits, and inspections, synchronizing delivery with shipyard milestones.
  • Conducts design intent and detail drawing reviews, factory visits, mock‑up reviews, and inspections, including:
    • Pre‑checks of architectural materials before forwarding to the yard to ensure compliance with design standards, guidelines, and cost limits.
    • Ensures reference levels are obtained and the yard’s scope and quality follow the approved architectural material.
    • Coordinates all design issues and border/transition areas.
    • Delegates to architectural outfitting superintendents and validates the quality of their work through self‑checking.
  • Leads mock‑up reviews and first production inspections of public spaces, guest staterooms, corridors, etc., for assigned responsibilities.
  • Tracks and reports on detailed design and production progress, focusing on time schedules, critical‑path milestones, costs, inspection completion, and quantity/closure of remarks, maintaining a strong focus on quality in accordance with contract or approved modifications, and reports to the Manager and Project Director.
  • Leads an efficient supervision process ensuring that design goals, quality, and guidelines are met while keeping costs on budget and ship readiness on schedule; frequently visits the shipyard site, walking onboard vessels under construction up to and beyond delivery.
  • Supports the Manager or Project Director as a co‑lead for high‑quality Chief Design Review processes, collaborating with the shipyard and Miami Architectural Design management to bring key status and issues to the forefront, including risk detection and mitigation; presents to executive level.
  • Owns cost management of all responsible interior and exterior areas, including art installations, signage, and architectural lighting, keeping the Manager or Project Director regularly informed.
  • Maintains good relations with shipyard leadership and management, area coordinators, and turn‑key contractors.
  • Acts on occasion in design‑related pre‑contract negotiations for research and development projects, preparing specifications and updating them based on internal discussions, and collaborates on white‑paper prototype projects.
  • Provides professional development of staff through experience sharing, mentoring, and feedback.
  • Effectively communicates the department’s values and culture through words and actions.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the project scope.
  • Manages costs within prototype projects ranging from $100 million each and additional sister projects simultaneously.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years in the cruise ship industry with on‑site construction experience and familiarity with shipbuilding processes, site surveys, and marine standards.
  • Proven knowledge of SOLAS and IMO regulations.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; Architectural and/or Naval Architecture degree preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong skills in reading detailed design and technical drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal English; German, French, and/or Finnish is an advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively with all management levels across diverse cultures worldwide.
  • Ability to simplify complex concepts and convey them clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong teamwork, cooperation, and collaboration skills to build rapport within the department and with other departments and external partners.
  • Self‑motivation and ability to mobilize people and resources to action in a high‑paced environment.
  • Proactive problem‑identification and solution implementation.
  • Logical reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work under tight schedules and endurance in high‑stress situations.
  • Working knowledge of computer software for communication and presentations.

Physical Demands

Good physical condition, able to endure extensive walking and stairclimbing within a heavy and loud shipbuilding construction environment.
