The Electrophysiology and Heart Modelling Institute (Liryc), a University-Hospital Institute based in Bordeaux (France), is a major actor in research, innovation, healthcare and education in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. It is structured as a Scientific Cooperation Foundation, under the aegis of the Bordeaux University Foundation, and was established by ministerial decree on November 25th 2011 within the framework of the “Investments for the Future program”. The founding members of Liryc are the University of Bordeaux, the Bordeaux University Hospital, the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria) and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Council.

Liryc is a unique translational research institute devoted to a better understanding and treatment of cardiac electrical diseases. It focuses specifically on atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, and heart failure. Its major objectives are to improve our understanding of disease mechanisms and develop novel preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the fight against cardiac electrical disorders.

The Institute is launching an open call to appoint a Scientific Director for an initial two year period (renewable). The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent, with established expertise in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias. The candidate should already hold a permanent position in a French national research organization or university and possess high-level scientific skills and a track record of management of multi-disciplinary and translational research projects. The candidate must also demonstrate experience in obtaining and managing large research grants.

The Scientific Director will provide leadership in the research activities of the Institute. Key responsibilities include strategic planning of the Institute’s scientific objectives and ambitions in relation with clinical unmet needs, acting as the main scientific liaison with the Institute’s governance bodies and various national and international stakeholders, leading the Institute’s scientific committee and coordinating transverse research programs, managing the Institute grant office and funding opportunities, participating in enhancing the reputation of the Institute through effective communication and knowledge diffusion, and organizing the institutional scientific events. The Scientific Director will also be expected to develop his/her own research program in one of the Institute’s main research areas.
