Description of Work

Keep critical communications running—one system at a time.

The NC State Highway Patrol is seeking a highly skilled and motivated team member to join our Troop B Radio Shop as an Electronics Technician II. This position performs extremely technical work providing maintenance, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of complex telecommunications systems and equipment that support statewide law enforcement communications and public safety operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences

  • Knowledge of electronic principles and the use of computers, mobile data computers, and networking applications.
  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment, including transceivers, modems, and network controllers.
  • Ability to use digital and electronic diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and reference materials.
  • Ability to analyze problems, troubleshoot, and repair telecommunications systems and related equipment.

Salary Range: $45,431.00-$53,927 Salary Grade: NC11

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain/Manage Telecommunications Equipment: Responsible for repair, programming, alignment, and testing of fixed, mobile, and portable transceivers and repeaters across multiple frequency bands.
  • Mobile Data Computer: Program and configure mobile data computers (MDC) and integrate with transceivers, modems, GPS systems, and power sources in vehicles.
  • Speed Measurement Instruments: Install, maintain, repair, and certify radar and speed timing equipment; perform annual certification testing and testify in court when required.
  • Communications Base Station Site Management: Install, program, align, and maintain base station telecommunications equipment, antennas, towers, and emergency power systems, including tower climbing and site construction support.
  • Video Surveillance Systems: Install, troubleshoot, and repair mobile video recording systems and associated components.
  • Control Station Operator Consoles: Maintain communications center control consoles and digital signal routing systems.
  • Mobile Installations: Install and configure communications and emergency equipment in vehicles, including radios, lighting, and data systems.
  • Administrative Activities: Maintain certification records, manage inventory, order parts, and coordinate equipment repairs.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Typical work schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm.

Additional Requirements

Qualified applicants must possess or have the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator License or an equivalent certification that authorizes the establishment, operation, and repair of fixed/mobile voice and data transceivers, communication networks, and related telecommunications equipment supporting the NCSHP system.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution

AND two years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus;

OR High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND four years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus;

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
