Job Description

An entry‑level Probation/Parole Officer is responsible for supervising and supporting offenders released to the community. The incumbent must provide case management, conduct home visits, manage offender compliance, make referrals for treatment, and maintain professional relationships with courts, law enforcement, and community agencies.

• Place offenders into appropriate supervision levels through investigative and assessment processes.
• Respond to offender behavior and non‑compliance.
• Make referrals regarding treatment that offenders need.
• Provide counseling to offenders.
• Carry an officer safety package including a firearm, pepper spray, and protective vest.
• Intervene in crisis situations and conduct arrests.
• Evaluate what an offender needs to successfully complete probation or parole.
• Maintain a professional demeanor while working with potentially volatile offenders.

Pre‑Application Requirements

• Pass background checks.
• Pass drug screening.
• Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job and pass a physical exam.
• Pass a psychological screening.
• Be a U.S. or naturalized citizen.

Post‑Hiring Requirements (within 90 days)

• Have a valid NC driver’s license.
• Live within 30 miles of the county to which assigned.
• Remain in the assigned county for two years.
• Reside within the state of North Carolina.

Certification and Training

Probation/Parole Officers must pass a firearms test, self‑defense class, and the Basic PPO Certification Exam. Certification requires attendance at eight consecutive weeks of Basic training and includes firearms, pepper spray, controls, restraints, defensive techniques, arrest procedures, search and seizure, drug testing, ethics, laws, procedures, and policies.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution. The four‑year degree requirement cannot be satisfied by equivalency. Candidates must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission and complete all General Certification requirements within one year.

Salary

Salary Range: $45,422 – $65,408. Salary Grade: NC07. Employees earn annual increases with a step pay plan. The first year salary is $45,422, increasing to $48,374 after one year of satisfactory employment, and exceeding $66,000 after six years.
