Power Engineer

Power Engineer – Davis H. Elliot Company, Inc. (Elliot) offers a professional opportunity to design and implement safe, reliable electric power systems for a variety of client industries. The role requires a self‑motivated professional engineer with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and relevant power system coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Perform power systems studies including arc flash, short circuit, and protection coordination.
  • Design electric distribution systems (480 V to 35 kV) with detailed physical layouts, one‑line diagrams, equipment selection, grounding, cable sizing, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
  • Act as the project engineer for multiple projects, directing drafters and coordinating with Civil and Structural engineers.
  • Specify, review, inspect, and approve electrical equipment and conduct equipment ratings, safety and maintenance clearances.
  • Execute protection and control design with relay settings and protect relay coordination.
  • Calculate short circuit, step & touch potential, thermal rating, battery sizing, and other engineering calculations with backup design documentation.
  • Interpret test results, evaluate maintenance testing, and perform electrical equipment inspection and engineering assessment.
  • Evaluate, monitor, and manage outside contractors and vendors, applying engineering principles to project execution.
  • Use AutoCAD for updates and minor changes, collaborate with other engineering disciplines, and prepare equipment specifications and bid analysis.
  • Develop project scope, conceptual design, and execution plans, preparing engineering and construction cost estimates and schedules.
  • Support construction of substations, equipment commissioning, and detailed electrical engineering analysis (short circuit, equipment evaluation, coordination, arc flash, load flow, harmonic, power quality).

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication.
  • Willing to travel to project sites (less than 30%).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and coordinate the work of various engineering disciplines and contractors.
  • Preferred: Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
  • Experience in system studies.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI/IEEE, NFPA 70E, and NEC standards for design.
  • In‑depth comprehension of syncrophasor, stability, and symmetrical components.
  • Software experience including SKM Powertools, ETAP, Easy Power, PSCAD, Windmill, CYME, Aspen, PSS‑CAPE, PSS/E or other power system modeling software (plus).
