Main mission:

The holder of the ASSET Junior Professor Chair (Tenure Track Professor) will be responsible for developing and structuring a research programme of excellence at the interface of advanced algorithmics, embedded systems electronics and electrical energy storage and conversion devices, within the EM3 team (Electronics, Microelectronics and Modelling for Multidomain Systems) of the UMR ICube laboratory. Grounded in a systems-level approach spanning from the physical modelling of embedded electronic components to the intelligent supervision of storage architectures, the successful candidate will contribute to establishing INSA Strasbourg as a European centre of reference for the diagnosis, supervision and optimisation of energy management systems, in close collaboration with the team's industrial and academic partners. In terms of teaching, the holder will deliver a 64-hour per year equivalent tutorial service within the Electrical Engineering program of the GEE Department, drawing on active and innovative pedagogical approaches that foster the research-teaching nexus and enhance the international attractiveness of the programme.

Research :

The holder of the ASSET Junior Professor Chair will lead a research programme of high strategic value at the interface of embedded systems electronics, advanced algorithmics and electrical energy storage and conversion devices. Combining academic excellence with industrial R&D experience, including proven knowledge of real-time electronic architectures as well as a track record in patent filing and the development of public-private collaborative projects, the successful candidate will be well positioned to establish INSA Strasbourg and the ICube laboratory as key players in technology markets of critical importance to national and European sovereignty.

The programme is primarily centred on mastering the full design chain of advanced algorithms for current and emerging battery chemistries, in close alignment with the research activities of the EM3 team. It is structured around three interconnected and closely intertwined scientific themes. The first targets the development of hybrid algorithms combining multi-physics modelling of electronic components, predictive control and machine learning for the real-time supervision of storage systems in critical applications: electrical grid stabilisation, decarbonised heavy mobility and the secure power supply of digital infrastructures, whose energy demand across Europe and North America is growing structurally driven by the rise of generative artificial intelligence.

The resulting technological building blocks, drawing on cross-disciplinary expertise in power electronics, control engineering and applied mathematics, will be adaptable and transferable to industrial players designing or operating energy systems across the automotive, aerospace, defence and energy production sectors. The second theme focuses on the design of high-fidelity digital twins integrating electrical, thermal and electrochemical cell modelling for the precise estimation of state indicators and the prediction of remaining useful life of storage devices, leveraging robust estimation techniques and embedded implementation methods proven in demanding industrial environments. The third theme, driven by sovereignty objectives, concerns the development of supervision algorithms and electronic management architectures dedicated to emerging storage technologies, in particular sodium-ion batteries, reducing technological dependence on non-European BMS suppliers and actively contributing to the European regulatory framework on batteries.

Beyond these scientific themes, the holder will contribute to the development and co-coordination of structuring research projects aimed at enhancing the scientific visibility of the EM3 team at national, European and international levels. The holder will play a driving role in the design and management of competitive projects (ERC Starting Grant, ANR, ADEME, Bpifrance, Horizon Europe, etc.), fostering the emergence of interdisciplinary collaborations and the consolidation of long-term academic and socio-economic partnerships. This dynamic will support the production of original knowledge, the attractiveness of the institution and research-based training. In a second phase, selected outcomes of this work may be subject to appropriate valorisation activities, including intellectual property protection, patent filing where relevant, and the implementation of technology transfer initiatives in collaboration with SATT Conectus, the Alsace University Innovation Hub (PUIA) and relevant socio-economic partners. Active participation in national and international scientific networks will further amplify the academic and applied impact of the research conducted.

Teaching :

The successful candidate will be expected to teach the equivalent of 64 tutorial hours per year mainly for students enrolled in the Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics programs. The candidate may contribute to courses related to energy storage systems, applied algorithms, and the modelling and hybridisation of multiphysics models. Teaching activities may rely on a variety of innovative pedagogical approaches, including project-based learning, flipped classrooms, experimental activities, and peer learning. Participation in courses taught in English may be envisaged to support the internationalisation of the curricula and the integration of international students. Topics related to ecological transition and eco-design may progressively be incorporated into the teaching activities. In the longer term, following tenure, the successful candidate may be encouraged to develop or coordinate new courses in these areas, in line with programme needs and their own expertise.

Beyond their statutory teaching duties, the successful candidate may contribute to the educational and collegial life of the institution by supporting the evolution of academic programmes, particularly through the development of digital resources and innovative educational content in the fields of battery management systems (BMS), artificial intelligence, and energy systems. Progressive involvement in continuing education activities, the development of open learning modules (e.g., MOOCs), and initiatives aimed at enhancing the visibility of INSA Strasbourg, notably within the ECIU network, will be encouraged.Proficiency in French is desirable, while the ability to teach in English will be considered an asset in the context of the institution’s strong international orientation. Familiarity with the cross-border industrial and academic environment, as well as knowledge of German, will also be appreciated. Finally, the successful candidate may contribute to the promotion of the Electrical Engineering programme and to technological monitoring activities related to the equipment and software resources of the Electrical Engineering platform.

The Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Strasbourg is an engineering and architecture school which welcomes around 2,000 students in the heart of Strasbourg, the European capital.

Its remit includes the initial training of engineers and architects, scientific and technological research, continuing professional development for engineers, and the promotion of scientific and technical culture. This is carried out in line with the humanist ideals championed by Gaston Berger, the founder of the INSA network.

INSA Strasbourg offers:

This research is carried out in collaboration with three research units at the site: ICube, AMUP and the Charles Sadron Institute.

INSA Strasbourg is a key player in the local Idex initiative, a member of the INSA Group at national level and of the ECIU consortium at European level. The school has signed numerous international exchange agreements and has strong historical links with the local and national socio-economic sectors.

INSA is an institution with extended responsibilities and competences, accredited under the HRS4R scheme (European human resources strategy for researchers).

The teaching activities of the ASSET Junior Professor Chair (Tenure Track Professor) will be attached to the Department of Electrical and Energy Engineering (GEE) at INSA Strasbourg, which encompasses two specialisms: Electrical Engineering (GE) and Thermal, Energy and Environmental Engineering (GT2E). The Electrical Engineering program provides a four-year programme training versatile engineers with a strong practical dimension, covering the full spectrum of electrical energy domains, from energy conversion to embedded systems supervision.

The research activities of the ASSET Chair will be conducted within the ICube laboratory (CNRS UMR 7357 : Laboratory of Engineering Sciences, Computer Science and Imaging), specifically within the EM3 team (Electronics, Microelectronics and Modelling for Multidomain Systems). Since 2017, the INSA Strasbourg-based EM3 team has developed a recognised research focus on the intelligent management of hybrid energy storage systems, combining optimal, predictive and artificial intelligence-based approaches. The team explores multi-scale modelling at both macroscopic (behavioural) and microscopic (physical phenomena) levels, including thermal modelling for the prediction of thermal runaway and remaining useful life (RUL). The successful candidate will build upon this established trajectory by bringing cutting-edge algorithmic expertise, identified as the critical lever at the European level.
