About the Host Institution

III-V Lab is a private R&D organisation located in Palaiseau and in Grenoble (France) and was jointly established by Nokia, Thales and the CEA. Ca. 120 research staff work in the organization, including 20 PhD students. III-V Lab conducts R&D activities in the field of III-V micro/nanoelectronics and photonic components and circuits for different applications: telecom, defence, security, safety, space etc. As an industrial laboratory, III-V Lab has the mission to transform research results into innovative products. III-V Lab carries out research & development activities on several semiconductor platforms. The monolithic InP platform allows advanced photonic & high-speed electronic devices and circuits for a large panel of applications. Silicon photonic is a 2nd technology platform gaining in maturity in III-V Lab. Thin Film Lithium Niobate is an emerging 3rd technology platform for low energy consumption high performance device and circuit research in III-V Lab. All R&D subjects in III-V Lab are strategically aligned with the industrial objectives of its three stakeholders.Further information is available at:

About the MGICIAN Doctoral Network

MGICIAN is a Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network dedicated to developing sustainable magnesium-based thermoelectric materials and translating them into high-performance solid-state cooling technologies. The network brings together academic and industrial partners across Europe and trains 15 Doctoral Candidates (m/f/div) in materials development, interface engineering, module fabrication, and system integration.

Project Overview

DC13 will focus on the development and validation of thermoelectric cooling solutions for advanced photonic devices within the MGICIAN Doctoral Network. This project will address the thermal management challenges in laser diodes and integrated optical platforms. Particular emphasis is placed on improving thermal stability, wavelength control, energy efficiency, and operational reliability. This project will combine thermal modelling, system integration, and experimental validation to establish device-cooling-performance relationships and ensure compatibility with scalable and application-oriented photonic technologies.

Research Tasks and Training Objectives

The Doctoral Candidate (m/f/div) will:

  • Analyse the thermal behaviour and heat generation mechanisms in photonic devices
  • Develop and apply numerical thermal models for photonic devices integrated with thermoelectric coolers
  • Elaborate a process of III-V-based Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC), compatible with thermoelectric module integration
  • Support the integration of thermoelectric cooling solutions into photonic platforms
  • Experimentally evaluate thermal stability, wavelength control, and energy efficiency of cooled devices
  • Implement and demonstrate thermoelectric module-integrated PIC with lasers or semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)
  • Assess the impact of thermoelectric cooling on device lifetime and reliability
  • Collaborate closely with module and system-focused DCs within the network
  • Participate in secondments, network-wide scientific training, and transferable skills activities
  • Disseminate research results through peer-reviewed publications, international conferences, and outreach initiatives

Secondments

DC13 will undertake the following secondments:

  • University College Cork (Ireland) – 3 monthsFocus: Integration of thermoelectric modules and advanced interface concepts
  • IFW Dresden (Germany) – 3 monthsFocus: Performance optimisation of thermoelectric modules for photonic applications
  • Strong background in photonics, device physics, or thermal management
  • Experience with numerical modelling tools (e.g., COMSOL, FEM, or similar software)
  • Knowledge of semiconductor devices or laser systems is advantageous
  • Experience with experimental device characterisation is desirable
  • Interest in thermoelectric cooling technologies and cross-sector applications

Personal Skills

  • Strong analytical and interdisciplinary problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and within an international collaborative research network
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Specific Requirements

MSCA Doctoral Candidate Eligibility Criteria

  • Must not hold a PhD degree and qualify as Early-Stage Researchers under MSCA-DN rules
  • Applicants must comply with the MSCA mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date

The mobility rule is not related to nationality

Education

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
