Description of Work
This position is assigned to Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, NC. Work in this class involves first‑line supervision of Correctional Officer III’s in close‑custody institutions, assigning lower‑level custody staff to specific areas or posts, and overseeing officer activities and performance to maintain custody, security, and inmate welfare.
Responsibilities
Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and ensure that rules and regulations are followed according to policy. They supervise more staff than lower‑level Correctional Sergeants I or II, report to a Correctional Lieutenant III or Housing Unit Manager, and ensure staff is fully trained. They maintain facility security through inspections, give direction during drills, searches, and emergencies, refer inmates for temporary restrictive housing, lead tactical assignments, respond to emergencies, search for escaped offenders, conduct and supervise searches for contraband, investigate security issues and incidents, prepare and review reports, complete annual performance evaluations, assist in employee discipline, conduct staff briefings, and perform other related duties as required. Employees must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Salary Range
$41,206 - $72,113
Qualifications
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G.0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Special Qualifications
MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Required Adverse Weather Reporting
This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
