Overview

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

The work in this role involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officers in minimum-custody facilities, increasing custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Correctional Officers in minimum-custody facilities and manage shift coverage.

• Assign staff to posts and areas, monitor activities and performance, and ensure custody, security, and welfare of offenders.

• Develop and adjust work schedules, implement procedures, and enforce rules and policies.

• May serve as highest-ranking custody staff on site or as Officer-in-Charge (OIC).

• Report to a Correctional Lieutenant I or Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Preferences

Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

The KSAs/Management Preferences are not required. Preferred: Documented knowledge of Prison Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
