About Us
The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Recruitment Range: $76,041 - $88,119

This position handles litigation and appeals involving Medicaid and other programs of public assistance in the Office of Administrative Hearings and State superior and appellate courts. The types of litigation that are handled by this position include defending actions brought by Medicaid recipients and applicants challenging decisions related to services and eligibility. This position serves as attorney for the State when convicted criminals appeal from judgments entered pursuant to trial or engages in other post-conviction practice, including motions for appropriate relief, stay of sentence, and writ of supersedeas.
Some travel, including occasional overnight stays, is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
- Experience with litigation including legal drafting, discovery, motions drafting and practice, preparing exhibits for trial.
- Experience practicing before the Office of Administrative Hearings or other administrative tribunals.
- Knowledge of Medicaid and other public assistance programs.
Minimum Education and Experience
Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and one year of professional legal experience.
