Energy, Environmental, and Utility Law Attorney
Join our Energy, Environmental, and Utility Law Group, where you will focus on siting and permitting of electric transmission lines, electric distribution lines and natural gas pipelines. Although the initial focus of this work will be on PSL Article VII and Article VIII siting, this role also offers the opportunity to advise clients on complex infrastructure projects, navigate regulatory permitting and compliance requirements, and represent developers before regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing counsel on siting, permitting and development of electric transmission and distribution infrastructure and gas pipelines.
- Representing clients before the New York State Public Service Commission, Department of Public Service, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other siting regulatory bodies.
- Drafting and reviewing applications, permits and compliance filings under PSL Article VII and Article VIII and related statutes.
- Conducting environmental and land use reviews under SEQRA and municipal zoning laws.
- Advising on stakeholder engagement, community outreach and risk management.
- Collaborating with engineers, consultants and project managers on regulatory and permit application development.
- Providing litigation support in administrative hearings or disputes.
- Monitoring evolving energy policies and advising clients on implications.
What You’ll Bring
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in New York State. New Jersey admission a plus.
- Ability to represent clients before the New York Public Service Commission and various siting agencies.
- Eight or more years of experience in electric transmission and siting with demonstrated knowledge of environmental and utility law components. Knowledge of gas pipeline siting a plus.
- Strong legal writing, research and advocacy skills.
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and multidisciplinary teams, including external engineering firms.
- Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
Experience Includes
- Prior work on major transmission or gas pipeline projects in New York.
- Familiarity with renewable energy siting and integration with transmission infrastructure.
- Background in administrative law or environmental litigation.
Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary, an excellent benefits package and a collaborative, friendly environment. The salary range for this role is $180,000 – $250,000. Actual salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience.
