Description of Work
This entry‑level position serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer in the Union County Resident’s Office. The role assists the Resident Engineer in day‑to‑day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: performing project field inspections; preparing monthly/final pay estimates; creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims; ensuring compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements; resolving constructability issues; and serving as the DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the general public.
Employees must communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment; use computers and electronic tablets; and apply Department safety standards. Exposure to hazards such as construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and working at heights or over water is expected. Physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing will be required, and work may occur at nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety toe shoes are required and the selected applicant must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
Salary Grade: NC16: Salary Range: $57,983 - $101,470
- Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts
- Experience directing, assisting, or training sub‑ordinate employees
- Experience administering contracts
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection, and/or construction surveying
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualification
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
