Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering

The Engineering Department within the College of Science, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, and Transportation (CSTEMT) at South Carolina State University invites applications for a 9‑month, full‑time, tenure‑track faculty position in the newly established Bachelor of Science program in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Fire Protection Engineering. The position is anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor level, although outstanding candidates at higher levels are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach a comprehensive range of core undergraduate courses in Fire Protection Engineering, including Life Safety Analysis (Introductory and Advanced), Fire Protection Fluid Mechanics, Smoke Management and Fire Alarm Systems, Water‑Based Fire Protection System Design, Structural Fire Protection, Advanced Fire Suppression, Fire Dynamics, Fire‑Informed Performance‑Based Design, Fire Assessment Methods Lab & Capstone, and Fire Assessment Methods.
• Contribute to the development of laboratories for the new concentration within the civil engineering curriculum.
• Assist the engineering department in teaching basic engineering courses as needed (e.g., statics, land surveying, strength of materials, CAD drawing, engineering ethics).
• Engage in effective teaching, scholarly activities, and service to the University, which are required for retention, promotion, and tenure.

Minimum Requirements for Entry into Position

• Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Significant professional experience in the field.
• Dedication to excellence in undergraduate teaching, commitment to service, and evidence of scholarly achievements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree, or academic/practical experience, familiarity with ABET accreditation requirements, and registration as a Professional Engineer (PE in Fire Protection) or the ability to obtain within a reasonable time.
