Transportation Worker III (S)
This position functions as a Transportation Worker III in addition to work performed at all prior levels. This work is related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State‑owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes 54 inches and larger within Division 2. The responsibilities include equipment operation; pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, draw bridge operation, contract inspection, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipes, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspection, trenching and shoring, maintenance to ferry dock ramps, lead paint removal, steel fabrication, steel beam repairs, and other duties as assigned. The position is technical in nature and labor intensive, requiring work in diverse environments, all types of weather, around heavy equipment, and use of power tools. Forces up to 100 pounds of force may be exerted occasionally, and up to 50 pounds frequently. The role may involve working nights and weekends during inclement weather for snow and ice removal. This position is located in the Lenoir County Bridge Maintenance Department, with potential assignments in other Bridge Departments within the Division.
Additional Expectations
- Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement.
- Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire or completion of on‑the‑job training to obtain the license within 360 days of hire, as mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR 383).
- Pre‑employment drug testing is required.
- Completion of release (ALCDRG‑01) and background (ALCDRG‑06) forms to allow NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years regarding controlled substances and alcohol testing.
- Employee will perform work safely while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Safety toe footwear is required.
Management Preferences
- Experience serving as crew leader while performing bridge maintenance activities.
- Experience in rigging loads for crane/lifting operations.
- Experience in the maintenance and installation of erosion control devices.
- Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety Traffic Control.
- Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications & Background Checks

NC06 / $35,596 – $62,294
