Thèse-Innovations Photoniques pour un Réseau d'Accès Ultra-Haut Débit F/H
about the role
Your role is to conduct a thesis on "Photonic Innovations for an Ultra-High-Speed Access Network."The access network has recently shown significant growth due to the massive deployment of Fiber To The Home (FTTH). Market players have already focused on defining the optical technologies that will succeed the currently deployed technology, the "G-PON" standard, by offering ever-increasing speeds to users. These future technologies, such as the 50G-PON, which is already pre-commercial, will not only increase bandwidth but also address the ever-evolving needs of users. The VHSP (Very High Speed PON) is a concept that encompasses ongoing research efforts within the scientific community for the post-50G-PON access network. The pressure exerted on this segment of the network in terms of interface capacity necessitates rethinking it and potentially making a technological leap towards other families of solutions: PAM4, coherent detection (both "classic" and simplified), the use of physical resources such as frequency division multiplexing (FDM) in the electrical domain, or wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and classic NRZ at higher speeds… all of which must adapt to the multiple access topology of FTTH. The associated energy consumption is also a significant challenge, as is the ability to maintain interoperability of interfaces, avoid dependence on any particular vendor, and ensure the longevity of deployed passive infrastructures (fibers).
The objective of the thesis is to identify technological solutions that can address the previously described challenges and to assess their strengths and weaknesses while ensuring the future interoperability of systems. This will cover several aspects, starting with the setup of an optical transmission bench at 100 Gb/s/channel. This will allow for an understanding of the inherent difficulties of this type of high-frequency transmission: limits of electronics, the need for digital equalization (study of different solutions), non-linear effects (study and quantification of effects), etc., which will be the subject of research axes within the framework of the thesis.
