Overview
Work with the Renault Group Engineering Department to develop robust safety assurance methods for end‑to‑end AI in autonomous driving.
Responsibilities
- Conduct a structured literature review on AI safety, functional safety, formal methods and ADAS standards.
- Develop and validate a data‑driven framework that assesses AI robustness and failure modes.
- Design an independent rule‑based safety monitor that enforces safe operating boundaries.
- Implement runtime confidence estimation mechanisms for real‑time uncertainty quantification.
- Validate the approach through simulation and physical experiments, demonstrating compliance with ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 21448 (SOTIF), UNECE WP.29 and SAE J3016.
- Disseminate scientific results via peer‑reviewed publications and patent applications.
- Present progress regularly to the scientific monitoring committee and industrial stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or final year from a grande école d’ingénieur (ENSTA, UTC, INSA, etc.) or an Erasmus Mundus programme.
- Solid foundations in at least two of: AI/ML, control theory, systems engineering, software engineering, robotics.
- Industrial experience in AI applications to automated systems is an asset.
- Strong proposal skills, autonomy, clarity of reasoning and explanation.
- Excellent written and oral English; French is an asset.
Technical Knowledge
- Machine learning architectures, training, evaluation, and uncertainty quantification.
- Autonomous systems or ADAS (perception, planning, or control stack).
- Systems engineering and complex system modelling.
- Dependability, functional safety, or formal verification knowledge is a significant advantage.
Mindset & Approach
- Intellectual curiosity and motivation for hard, unsolved problems.
- Willingness to work at the intersection of theory, norms, and experiment.
- Rigorous, clear written and oral communication.
- Comfortable with uncertainty and open research questions.
Languages
- Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
- French is an asset for daily collaboration.
