Location: Brookhaven Laboratory (BNL) – Upton, New YorkEmployment Type: Contract (Contingent or W‑2), potentially convertible to a full‑time W‑2 position

Job Overview

Provide nuclear‑energy subject‑matter expertise to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), focusing on the AC‑100M centrifuge program and other enrichment technologies. The role supports engineering solutions, regulatory oversight, and project management for DOE’s national laboratories and related contractors across the Northeast region.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent technical reviews of centrifuge design, manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Provide expertise on Balance of Plant support systems and deployment.
  • Collaborate with DOE to assess reports and presentations related to centrifuge development and licensing.
  • Support DOE in evaluating enrichment capability deployment projects and ensure program schedule, cost, and performance compliance.
  • Assist in hiring and retaining key personnel for project execution and mitigate implementation risks.
  • Deliver services under a performance‑based service acquisition contract.
  • Support steady‑state operations focusing on cascade performance, maintenance, and parts replacement.
  • Perform functional assessments of Centrus compliance with regulatory criteria in lease agreements.
  • Conduct operational and compliance readiness reviews, walk‑downs, and field inspections at Centrus facilities.
  • Coordinate regulatory boundary activities with DOE contractors, site personnel, and the NRC.
  • Develop analyses, technical assessments, and white papers to support decisions by DOE/NE management.
  • Review and analyze reports, proposals, and cost documents related to uranium enrichment technologies.
  • Interpret and apply D‑Oe orders, MOAs, MOUs, and regulatory requirements concerning DOE lessees and contractors.
  • Manage security and facility access programs, including technical evaluations and readiness reviews.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise, project management, and technical assistance to NEHQ for planning, execution, and deployment of domestic enrichment capability.
  • Review and advise on special technical topics or issues as they arise, including cost estimate support.
  • Attend and provide assessment of Centrus reports and presentations on centrifuge deployment status.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear‑energy technologies, especially gas centrifuge enrichment processes and related manufacturing.
  • Experience with DOE orders, regulations, and lease agreements (Centrus/DOE/USEC).
  • Familiarity with OSHA, CERCLA, RCRA, and other environmental and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in project management, engineering analysis, and technical oversight.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills for developing white papers, reports, and technical assessments.
