Offer Description

Chirality is a fundamental pillar of molecular science, dictating how molecules interact with light, matter, and biological systems. Within this field, helicenes stand out due to their inherent curvature resulting in exceptional chiroptical properties. This PhD project aims to push these molecules beyond static structures by developing stimuli-responsive helicenes capable of controlled conformational changes at the single-molecule scale or within polymer architectures. Based at the Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes (ISCR), the candidate will work under the supervision of Yohan Gisbert and Jeanne Crassous, focusing on the multi-step organic synthesis and characterization of these stimuli-responsive chiral systems.A central part of this research involves a collaboration with the University of Liège, Belgium, where the candidate will spend approximately eight months (spread across multiple stays) in the laboratory of Anne-Sophie Duwez. There, the candidate will be trained to use Single-Molecule Force Spectroscopy (SMFS) to probe the dynamic mechanical response of the synthesized compounds. While prior experience in microscopy is not required, this position offers a unique opportunity for the candidate to gain high-level multidisciplinary expertise, bridging synthetic chemistry with advanced physical characterization.

Skills/Qualifications

Technical Expertise: Strong skills in synthetic organic chemistry, including Schlenk techniques, purification methods, and standard characterization tools (spectroscopy and data processing). A knowledge of polymer chemistry would be appreciated.Specialized Knowledge : A solid understanding of chirality or a strong desire to specialize in chiral materials science.Communication : The ability to clearly present research at international conferences and draft manuscripts for scientific journals in English.

A few candidates will be selected for an interview taking place around the first week of April. Results will then be communicated shortly.
