CEMEF is a research lab. of MINES ParisTech I PSL University associated with CNRS, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (Unité Mixte de Recherche CNRS, UMR7635).
Overall, our missions are research and training in collaboration with industry.
Our research focuses specifically on materials and their transformation processes in the broadest sense. It extends additionally to other fields such as fluid mechanics, biomechanics or HPC for instance. On the other hand, our training programmes offer post-graduate courses related to our scientific fields of expertise. Furthermore, we are attentive to the scientific needs of industry and we set up research projects with industrial companies.
Description
Project description:
A considerable proportion of sanitary napkins are made from polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene and super absorbent polymers, all being based on synthetic polymers and degrading very slowly, taking many years to break down when disposed in landfills.
The overall goal of a national project is to design and fabricate new 100% bio-based, biodegradable, and cost-effective sanitary napkins. One part of the work is devoted to the development of superabsorbent materials, in particular, based on cellulose, and it is performed in CEMEF/Mines Paris - PSL.
The goal of this internship is to perform chemical modifications of cellulose and design cellulose-based particles with controlled porosity and high absorption capacity. Materials will be characterized by kinetics of absorption of physiological media; the properties will be correlated with material density, porosity, specific surface area and morphology.
The work is at the frontier of polymer physics and physical chemistry, and materials processing. The research will involve formulation and processing, rheological characterization, electron microscopy, characterization of solutions, gels, and porous materials.
The experimental work will be performed in CEMEF/Mines Paris-PSL. CEMEF is world leader in the development of biomass-based materials, in particular, of porous materials based on cellulose.
