Profile Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Engineer – Backend Lead with 12+ years of experience in designing and building scalable backend systems using Java (Spring Boot), Node.js, and AWS cloud technologies. This role requires strong technical leadership, hands‑on development expertise, and ownership of end‑to‑end service architecture and delivery. The ideal candidate will design and develop cloud‑native services, drive engineering best practices, and mentor teams while balancing technical depth with strategic thinking to ensure high‑quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable, secure, and high‑performance backend services using Java (Spring Boot) and Node.js
- Develop cloud‑native applications leveraging AWS services, including Lambda, API Gateway, and related infrastructure
- Take full ownership of the software lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, and production support
- Architect and implement microservices and event‑driven systems
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following TDD and best engineering practices
- Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and architectural guidelines
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, and cross‑functional teams to refine requirements and deliver solutions
- Lead system design discussions and ensure scalable, resilient architecture decisions
- Implement CI/CD pipelines and manage infrastructure as code (Terraform/CloudFormation)
- Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback across teams
- Ensure observability, logging, monitoring, and alerting practices are implemented
- Work in a fast‑paced Agile environment with a focus on continuous delivery
Qualifications
- Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for backend systems
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of ownership and accountability
- Drive design and development of distributed systems and RESTful APIs
- Develop and maintain AWS‑based infrastructure and serverless applications with Lambdas
- Perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance tuning
- Define best practices for DevOps, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure management
- Ensure proper documentation of systems, architectures, and processes
- Collaborate with leadership and product stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals
- Support production systems, ensuring uptime, reliability, and incident resolution
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Exposure to event streaming systems (Kafka, SNS/SQS)
- Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, Datadog, etc.)
- Prior experience leading large‑scale cloud migration or transformation initiatives
- Exposure to security best practices in cloud‑native applications
- Experience working in high‑scale, high‑availability systems
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
- 12+ years of experience in backend development
- Strong hands‑on expertise in Java (Spring Boot) and Node.js
- Experience designing and building microservices architecture
- Strong knowledge of AWS services, especially Lambda, API Gateway, EC2, S3, DynamoDB/RDS
- Experience with serverless architectures
- Proficiency in REST APIs, distributed systems, and scalable application design
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design
- Experience with source control systems (e.g., Bitbucket/Git)
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
- Engineering degree or equivalent and a minimum of 12+ years of related experience
