Software Development Manager, Epoxy

Overview

As a Software Development Manager in the Security Operations team, you will own large-scale detection and response capabilities that protect every AWS customer. You will manage a team of security engineers and software development engineers responsible for automating threat detection enablement and security risk remediation across all AWS accounts. Our systems operate at massive scale, processing tens of millions of security findings monthly across tens of millions of accounts, and your team ensures this coverage is reliable, efficient, and continuously improving.

Responsibilities

• You own the software architecture of your team\'s systems, making technology trade-offs that balance reliability, scalability, and development velocity. You are responsible for setting technical standards and driving engineering excellence across your team, ensuring your systems meet the high bar expected of security-critical infrastructure at AWS scale.
• Lead by example to solve security challenges at massive scale through sound architectural decisions; define and execute your team\'s roadmap working backwards from customer needs.
• Hire, build and manage a cross-functional engineering team developing engineers, and foster a strong team culture grounded in engineering excellence.
• Define the roadmap for your team, partnering effectively with stakeholders to deliver engineering solutions ensuring reliable, scalable security coverage across all AWS accounts.
• Own the reliability and operational excellence of detection and response systems, driving down operational overhead through automation while maintaining consistent security coverage.
• Contribute to organizational planning, aligning your team\'s goals with broader strategy and resource planning.
• Make short-term vs. long-term decisions, set clear goals, prioritize projects, and delegate appropriately based on development objectives.
• Identify risks proactively and communicate mitigation plans to your manager, customers, and stakeholders.
• Communicate ideas effectively, write narratives and strategic documentation, and build consensus across teams.
• Work with customers, leaders, and other engineering teams to harmonize views and resolve contentious issues.
• Define metrics to measure team progress, customer experience, solution quality, and operational excellence; ensure customer engagement mechanisms and SLAs for operations.
• Review operational health of large-scale detection and response systems and drive automation improvements.
• Align short-term operational requirements with long-term system investments and measure reliability and efficiency improvements.

A day in the life

• Review the operational health of large-scale detection and response systems across all AWS accounts and address service degradation rapidly.
• Make architectural decisions and review designs to meet reliability and scalability bar for security-critical infrastructure.
• Drive automation that reduces manual operational burden and frees engineers for higher-value security work.
• Synchronize with other teams within AWS Security to maximize impact of shared capabilities.

About The Team

You will lead a team focused on large-scale detection and response automation across all AWS accounts. Your engineers have strong backgrounds in automation, distributed systems, AWS architecture, and incident response. We are part of an operational team and place a high emphasis on Bias for Action, Deliver Results, and Customer Obsession. Our customers and sponsors include executive leadership and our systems are key to securing Amazon. Our team is distributed across the world.

Basic Qualifications

• This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state
• Minimum of seven (7) years of software engineering experience
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing engineering teams (including coaching and mentoring)
• Experience owning software architecture and making technology trade-offs for production systems
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems and operational processes
• Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent experience
• Knowledge of internet security issues and threat landscape

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing and building engineering teams
• Experience managing operational and development efforts for high-availability production systems
• Experience with security incident response methods and tools
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical individuals up to executive level
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects in a dynamic environment
• Track record for being detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to self-motivate and follow-through on projects
• Familiarity with AWS cloud environment and architecture at scale
• Experience with security automation, threat detection systems, or security orchestration platforms
• Experience contributing to organizational planning cycles (OP1/OP2 or equivalent)
