Software Assurance Engineer – ATC Systems

Summary

Location: Toulouse (Hybrid) OR Paris (Hybrid) OR Barcelona (Hybrid)

Rate: Negotiable

Duration: Until End of 2026 – with possible extension

Our client is a global leader in aviation technology, delivering mission‑critical communications, connectivity and Air Traffic Management (ATM) solutions that support airlines, airports, Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) and government organisations worldwide. As part of continued investment in next‑generation Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems, they are seeking a Software Assurance Engineer to support the delivery of safety‑critical software in accordance with ED-109/DO-278A assurance standards.

Working alongside Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Safety, Verification & Validation (V&V) and Quality teams, you will play a key role in ensuring software lifecycle activities remain fully documented, traceable and compliant, supporting successful certification and regulatory approval within a highly regulated aviation environment.

About the Role

The Software Assurance Engineer is responsible for supporting the governance, documentation and compliance of safety‑critical ATC software throughout the software development lifecycle. Rather than developing application code, you will focus on software assurance activities, ensuring engineering artefacts, requirements, verification evidence and lifecycle documentation meet ED-109 Assurance Level expectations.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to maintain complete traceability from system requirements through to verification and regulatory evidence, helping deliver software that is safe, reliable and certifiable.

Key Responsibilities

Software Assurance & Compliance

  • Support software assurance activities across Air Traffic Control (ATC) software projects in accordance with ED-109/DO-278A assurance standards.
  • Ensure software lifecycle activities align with regulatory, quality and certification requirements.
  • Work closely with Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Safety, Quality Assurance and Verification & Validation teams to embed assurance practices throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Promote best practice for safety‑critical software development and continuous improvement.

Documentation & Lifecycle Management

  • Develop, maintain and update the Quality Management Plan (QMP).
  • Produce and maintain Software Management Plans.
  • Ensure lifecycle documentation remains accurate, complete and auditable.
  • Maintain software engineering documentation supporting certification activities.
  • Ensure all project documentation satisfies customer, regulatory and quality expectations.

Requirements Management & Traceability

  • Define and maintain robust requirements traceability processes.
  • Develop and maintain Requirements Traceability Matrices (RTMs).
  • Ensure complete traceability between:
    • System requirements
    • Software requirements
    • Software components
  • Support impact assessments following engineering or requirements changes.

Verification, Validation & Certification Support

  • Support software verification and validation activities.
  • Assist with gap analysis and compliance assessments.
  • Prepare evidence packages supporting internal reviews, customer audits and regulatory assessments.
  • Support milestone reviews and certification activities throughout the software lifecycle.
  • Ensure compliance evidence is complete, traceable and readily available for audit.

AI-Enabled Engineering

  • Leverage AI tools to improve:
    • Requirements analysis
    • Documentation quality
    • Traceability management
    • Compliance reporting
  • Identify opportunities to automate documentation and software assurance activities while maintaining regulatory integrity.
  • Identify opportunities to improve software assurance processes.
  • Support initiatives to increase compliance maturity across engineering teams.
  • Promote consistency, repeatability and efficiency throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives aligned with aviation best practice.

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years' experience within software engineering, software assurance or systems engineering in safety‑critical or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience working with ED-109, DO-278A or equivalent safety‑critical software assurance standards.
  • Experience producing formal engineering, lifecycle, quality or compliance documentation.
  • Strong understanding of software lifecycle management and assurance processes.
  • Experience with requirements management and end-to-end traceability.
  • Knowledge of software verification, validation and certification activities.
  • Experience supporting software audits and regulatory assessments.
  • Strong analytical, documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Technical Knowledge

  • Requirements Traceability
  • Quality Management Plans (QMP)
  • Software Lifecycle Management
  • AI‑assisted documentation and analysis tools
  • Experience within Air Traffic Management (ATM) or Air Traffic Control (ATC) environments.
  • Knowledge of ATC datalink systems or aviation communications.
  • Experience integrating AI tools into regulated software development environments.
  • Familiarity with aviation safety management and certification processes.
  • Experience working within aerospace, defence or other highly regulated engineering sectors.
