Description of Work
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Social Media Manager. The Social Media Manager leads the development, execution, and continuous improvement of the Museum’s social media strategy, establishing a cohesive and high‑performing digital presence across all platforms. This role is responsible for building and managing the Museum’s social media infrastructure, including content strategy, brand voice, workflows, and standard operating procedures. Through compelling storytelling and data‑driven decision‑making, this position translates scientific research, exhibits, and programs into accessible and engaging content that advances the Museum’s mission, increases public engagement, and supports attendance and institutional priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manages and creates all social media content for the Museum every day, multiple times per day across channels
- Manages and creates all events on social media; creates, edits, delegates content across all events and announcements
- Represents the Museum’s brand as a whole across social channels
- Collects data weekly, monthly and annually both from the Museum’s social channels as well as across the Museum’s satellite channels
- Strategizes based on quantitative data and qualitative
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences

- Demonstrated experience developing and executing social media strategies across major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) using platform‑specific best practices
- Skilled in digital marketing strategy, brand voice development, and end‑to‑end content planning and execution
- Proficient in using analytics tools to interpret performance data (e.g., engagement, reach, conversions) and apply insights to optimize content and strategy
- Knowledge of digital accessibility standards, including alt text, captioning, and inclusive language practices for web and social media content
- Proven ability to translate complex scientific or technical information into clear, engaging, and accessible content for broad public audiences
Position / Physical Requirements
- 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, some evenings/weekends as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, journalism, English, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Recruitment Range
$43,267 - $60,000
