Scientist in Algorithms and High-Performance Computing (HPC) for Phase-Contrast Imaging

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

BM18 is a flagship ESRF beamline dedicated to high-sensitivity phase-contrast tomography of large and complex samples, combining hierarchical phase-contrast tomography and propagation phase-contrast imaging. Over recent years, BM18 has enabled advanced acquisition modes delivering exceptional results in image quality, in step with progress in reconstruction methods, algorithm development and high-performance computing (HPC).

You will reinforce the algorithmic, reconstruction and HPC component of BM18, in close collaboration with beamline scientists and ESRF computing scientists. The position builds on an already ongoing development effort, contributing additional capacity for method development, implementation and consolidation, while also spending around 25% of the time bringing developments made for BM18 back into the main ESRF tomography tools codebase for use on other beamlines.

The work will take place in the Algorithms & scientific Data Analysis (ADA) group, in close collaboration with the BM18 beamline. Further information about the post can be obtained from Vincent Favre-Nicolin ( (emailprotected) ) and Alessandro Mirone ( (emailprotected) ).

Your missions include:

  • Developing and improving reconstruction and image-processing methods for advanced tomographic experiments at BM18.
  • Designing and optimising scalable processing workflows for very large datasets and the corresponding HPC infrastructure.
  • Contributing to the stabilisation, documentation and maintainability of reconstruction tools for routine and high-end use.
  • Working closely with beamline scientists and participating in to experiments to align algorithmic developments with experimental needs and user projects.
  • Contributing to the transfer and adaptation of methods developed at BM18 to other ESRF tomography beamlines.
  • PhD degree or equivalent in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Imaging Science or a related field
  • Strong experience in algorithm development, scientific computing, image processing, inverse problems or related areas
  • A strong interest in working at the interface between experiments, data and computation
  • Experience in tomography, synchrotron imaging or reconstruction methods is an asset, though not a strict requirement
  • Capacity to learn and evolve in a demanding environment where algorithmic developments are tightly coupled to challenging experimental conditions
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and in close interaction with scientists and engineers from different backgrounds
  • A rigorous, solution-oriented and scientifically mature approach
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

3-year temporary contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
