Overview
The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It oversees adult supervision, healthcare, and facilities throughout the state. As a Safety Consultant (NS), you will support the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) by providing technical safety guidance, interpreting codes and regulations, and ensuring consistent safety practices across Construction Apprenticeship Program project sites.
Responsibilities
- Provide code and regulatory interpretation across OSHA, NEC, NFPA, the N.C. State Building Code, and related safety standards.
- Act as a technical liaison with OSHA Technical Services, OSHA Consulting Services, OSHA Enforcement, OSHA Training and Education, and the State Construction Office.
- Conduct required safety training on multiple construction safety topics, including equipment operation, hazard assessments, fall protection, PPE, and confined space safety.
- Deliver OSHA 10‑hour and 30‑hour Construction Industry Awareness Training and issue Competent Person certifications.
- Perform monthly on‑site safety inspections for construction projects, the Logistics Yard, and the Fabrication Shop; produce written inspection reports.
- Work with on‑site project personnel to identify safety deficiencies and support corrective actions.
- Coordinate with CAP managers and the Director of Construction Operations to ensure safety program requirements are met across all CAP projects.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with OSHA, NFPA, NEC standards for General Industry and Construction.
- Experience with federal and state construction site safety practices, materials, and processes.
- Experience managing general industry and construction safety programs on residential, commercial, or institutional projects.
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or a related technical field AND a minimum of three years of progressive occupational and safety experience.
- Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications Required
- OSHA 500 certification and OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer in Construction within six months of hire.
- CPR and First Aid Trainer Certification within six months of hire.
