We are seeking a full‑time Robotics Software and Systems Engineer to join our team at Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI), an independent institute within the Department of Engineering Science in central Oxford. This fixed‑term post runs until June 2027.

About ORI

ORI won The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for innovation in autonomous robotic technologies. We are a diverse, collaborative community of researchers, engineers and students working to transform what robots can do. Our research ranges from flying to grasping, inspection to running, haptics to driving, and exploration to planning. We specialise in large‑scale mobile autonomy both indoors and outdoors and deploy robotic systems in real application environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, program, test, and maintain a large fleet of robots and systems.
  • Develop, deploy and maintain code that interfaces with hardware.
  • Write software in C++ and Python, using CUDA, ROS, ROS 2, PyTorch, Docker and CI/CD tooling.
  • Create and debug large software projects, develop containerised applications and implement automated build‑and‑deployment workflows.
  • Write interfaces to integrate sensors into complex systems.
  • Support field trials, working with on‑site teams to oversee robotic platforms from both technical and health‑and‑safety standpoints.
  • Contribute to projects that develop long‑term autonomy for wheeled and legged robots navigating new and challenging environments.

Requirements

  • Strong background in software engineering, with experience in developing, deploying and maintaining code that interfaces with hardware.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Familiarity with CUDA, ROS, ROS 2, PyTorch, Docker, CI/CD tooling and containerised applications.
