The Research Scientist III, Chemical Development’s principal responsibility is the synthesis, purification, identification, process development, optimization, and scale-up of chemical intermediates and target compounds.

Supervisory responsibilities
This position may have supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives
- Synthesize known compounds efficiently
- Purify synthesized chemicals to an appropriate degree
- Analyze and identify compounds using a good range of modern separation and spectroscopic techniques. This will include interpretation of TLC, HPLC, polarimetry, IR, mass and NMR spectra of moderate complexity
- Optimize the reaction processes for scale-up by making appropriate modifications of known methods or modification of reaction conditions under minimal supervision
- Conduct literature searches for specific target compounds, structures related to the target compound, or to determine specific conditions for compounds and reactions
- Recommend and implement methods to increase the quality of products and/or service
- Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts
- Represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects
- Find new and better ways of performing job by challenging established procedures
- Manage workload and time to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis
- Display the ability to assimilate previously gained knowledge and experience and apply those concepts, techniques, etc. to new and related project areas
- Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Maintain familiarity with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices
- Follow responsible actions regarding chemical disposal. Maintain compliance with all regulations at the federal, state, and local levels
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field — Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience
- OR Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field — Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience
- OR Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field
Other qualifications
- Must pass a background check
- Must pass a drug screen
- May be required to pass Occupational Health Screening
- May be required to obtain and maintain gowning certification
- May be required to obtain and maintain media qualification
Pay Range
Pay Range: $77,000 annually
Education, experience, location and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
