Renewable Technician Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operational rounds and operations activities including complex Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Outs (LOTOs). This includes training to become LOTO desk qualified.
  • Perform SCADA, Telecomm, inverter, battery system, and array maintenance tasks.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Perform all LOTO tasks needed for maintenance activities including research, development, isolation, independent verification, zero energy verification and work leader duties.
  • Perform contractor oversight duties.
  • Communicate with Operations Centers (RROC, TCC, ECC) regarding daily plant/equipment status and maintenance. Daily travel may include multiple site visits.
  • Perform rotational On‑Call duties in support of Peak and Baseload generation needs.
  • Perform record keeping duties concerning Environmental, Health & Safety records, spreadsheets and documents.
  • Ability to read and understand technical OEM manuals, recommendations, and warranty agreements.
  • Perform startup duties necessary to commission new sites, including creating punch lists, developing procedures and PMs, system walk downs, assisting startup personnel with commissioning activities, starting/stopping units from multiple branded Control Systems.
  • Must have strong instrumentation, electrical/electronic controls knowledge to troubleshoot, maintain and operate a photovoltaic solar plant and/or battery storage site.
  • Take the role as integration lead for new sites to ensure RRE standards are met prior to turnover from Duke’s construction group. This requires the ability to coordinate, time manage, and keep thorough records.
  • New hires must be able to become proficient in the aforementioned required skills to troubleshoot varying technologies.
  • Ability to read and understand technical electrical, civil, and mechanical drawings.
  • General knowledge of high voltage equipment and ability to perform high voltage switching.
  • Prepare service reports for site visits, emergency repairs, equipment modifications, and equipment improvement investigations.
  • Ensure a safe, event‑free work environment by adhering strictly to company protocols.
  • Enforce procedures and processes in accordance with site‑specific O&M Standards and guidelines.
  • Develop and review site‑specific procedures.
  • Understand and enforce BES site requirements.
  • Position requires 50% domestic regional travel.

Basic/Required Qualifications – Renewables Tech I

  • Technical or Associate’s Degree.
  • In lieu of Technical or Associate’s degree, a HS Diploma or GED and 2 years related experience.

Basic/Required Qualifications – Renewables Tech II

  • Technical or Associate’s Degree.
  • One year of related experience.
  • In lieu of Technical or Associate’s degree, a HS Diploma or GED and 3 years related experience.

Basic/Required Qualifications – Renewables Tech III

  • Technical or Associate’s Degree.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • In lieu of Technical or Associate’s degree, a HS Diploma or GED and 3 years related experience.

Specific Requirements

  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
  • Must live within approximately 30‑mile radius of assigned site(s)/area of responsibility.
  • Capable of passing background check for NERC CIP.
  • Must successfully complete EEI’s Plant Operator Selection System (POSS)/Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS).
  • Must successfully complete a Power Plant Physical Abilities Assessment.
  • Required to pass physical assessment.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Job‑Specific Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Strong background in electrical and electronic equipment troubleshooting and repair, both AC and DC.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively direct owners and contract company associates.
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate problem‑solving ability.
  • Must be motivated to work independently.
  • Must have strong organization skills.
  • Must have experience using electrical test and measurement equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot from schematics.
  • Solid working knowledge of various measurement techniques desired.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair fiber optic networks to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to adapt to other crafts (e.g., mechanical, civil, etc.).
  • Relevant experience with PV systems or equivalent PV training.
  • Previous experience working with inverters.
  • Experience with centralized SCADNEMS control systems and associated network devices.
  • Working knowledge of Power Distribution systems.
  • Electrical Design experience.
  • Maximo CMMS experience.
  • Experience with fiber optic networks.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Power Point).
  • Knowledge of general safety and environmental practices.
  • Working knowledge/troubleshooting EMERSON Ovation.
  • Have or willingness to obtain EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification.

Working Conditions

  • Field mobility: Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. Field employees must live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • Will sit and stand for long periods of time during the day.
  • Will walk, climb stairs and operate equipment.
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below waist.
  • May lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to use hands to finger, lift, handle, carry or feel objects.
  • May stoop, kneel, bend, talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities are required.
  • Ability to work in high temperatures (85+ degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Travel requirements: approximately 50% regional travel to sites across North and South Carolina; no overnight stays required unless attending out‑of‑state training or special assignments.

  • Under Construction: Elm City BESS – Elm City, NC.
  • Under Construction: Red Bud Solar – Castalia, NC.
  • Under Construction: Knightdale BESS – Knightdale, NC.
  • Under Construction: New Hill BESS – New Hill, NC.
