Description of Work
This position is located at NC Correctional Institution for Women, Raleigh NC. The individual assigned to this role will report to the Associate Warden for Operations and must ensure that performance-based standards and practices are established and maintained.
Responsibilities
- Oversee recreational program for offenders within a state prison facility.
- Review current recreation programs and maintain compliance for accreditation and develop new structures to enhance and improve programs.
- Analyze and develop a comprehensive annual recreation plan to promote the physical, mental, emotional and social well‑being of the population.
- Plan structured activities with specific purposes that include various types such as leisure activities, topic‑focused activities, all of which at various times will involve both the facility and the community.
- Coordinate seasonal and holiday events.
- Examine critical needs such as evaluating recreational areas; preventive maintenance of equipment and upkeep, purchasing supplies, reporting damages, inventory and distribution.
- Facilitate and review library access for all offenders (books, movies); and communicate concerns and/or revised procedures and plans with staff and management.
- Ensure offenders with disabilities housed in close custody and/or restrictive housing have access to all recreational programs within their assigned restrictions.
- Work strategically with community agencies to enrich programs, establish new programs and work with community volunteers.
- Supervise staff and offenders who work with the recreational programs but will not be responsible for an offender caseload.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (preferred)
- Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons operations gained through work experience in a correctional facility.
- Documented knowledge of services available from community and other public and private programs through work experience or personal volunteer experience.
- Documented work experience developing or supporting activities or events for a large group of individuals.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
