Job Description

Airbus Aerosystems Kinston is looking for a Quality NDT Multi‑Function Manager to join our team based in Kinston, NC. We are seeking a detail‑oriented and highly organized aviation Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) team leader to join the Product Inspection team. This role will be critical in monitoring full adherence to the various manufacturing and quality processes within our facility to ensure compliance with the stringent quality and regulatory standards in the aviation industry. The ideal candidate will be a manager and technical expert who is passionate about process confirmation, manufacturing and operational excellence. This role is responsible for identifying potential process gaps and improvement opportunities to secure our manufacturing environment and ensure our aircraft are manufactured in accordance with international standards, regulatory requirements, and internal processes.

Your Working Environment

The Airbus Aerosystems Kinston facility sits at the forefront of aerospace manufacturing, specializing in the production of large, advanced composite aerostructures. Our team builds critical components for the state‑of‑the‑art Airbus A350 XWB, including the composite centre fuselage and wing spar.

Your Challenges

  • Lead and direct NDT (Non‑Destructive Testing) organizations and provide cross‑functional NDT integration leadership.
  • Manager of NDT personnel within assigned functional area, across multiple shifts.
  • Lead and direct NDT technicians (Airbus direct, contractors and/or purchase services).
  • Reviews production schedule and assigns work to facilitate completion of tasks and product movement in accordance with established schedule.
  • Interfaces with other organizations, external suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies to define, evaluate and communicate accomplishment of project and program priorities through all phases in the product or service life.
  • Provides organizational vision and strategic plan, quality policies, processes, and procedures, as well as process improvements and prevention measures.
  • Establishes, monitors and administers processes, policies and best practices, and determines resource requirements, acquisition, improvement plans and quality measures.
  • Provides cross‑functional leadership and NDT technical expertise.
  • Mentor NDT team members, fostering a culture of accountability, safety and ongoing development.

Qualified Experience and Training

Your Boarding Pass

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
  • Associate’s degree or 6 years of equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in NDT in addition to the education requirements above, within a composite aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to travel up to 5% to domestic and/or international customers or suppliers
  • Must be willing and able to work any shift, overtime weekends and holidays when needed.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of aviation Quality Management Systems, Safety Management Systems, and FOD programs, preferably in manufacturing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with internal teams through all levels of the organization and functions.
  • Knowledge with NDT practices (Ultrasonic, Phased Array, Pulse Echo).
  • Working knowledge of AS9100, NADCAP and other customer requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • High degree of flexibility and initiative.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, specifically in English, which is required for operating in a multicultural and multifunctional environment.
  • Proficient in Manufacturing tools (MES) and quality management systems (QMS) used in manufacturing environments.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in NDT within a composite aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Certifications in quality management, aviation safety, or regulatory compliance preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with aerospace‑specific tools such as SAP, MES systems, and statistical software (e.g., Minitab, JMP).

Physical Requirements

  • Onsite or remote: 100% On‑site
  • Vision: Daily able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings.
  • Hearing: Daily able to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Speaking: Daily able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): Rarely able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.
  • Carrying: Weekly able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Lifting: Weekly able to lift documents, tools, drawings, and electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Pushing / Pulling: Several times a month able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.
  • Sitting: Daily able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: Daily able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: Daily able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor.
  • Travel: Once or twice a year able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking (including routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): Daily able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site.
  • Required PPE: Safety glasses, bump caps and safety‑toed shoes must be worn when on the manufacturing floor.
