We are seeking a dynamic and mission-driven fellow to support design for the AI Potluck—Current AI’s strategy for convening open-source AI contributors around shared public-interest goals.

As part of your fellowship, you will support design work across the organization that helps the potluck work: frontend web, application, and product design that makes shared spaces legible, welcoming, and useful for dozens of builders, maintainers, and contributors across the movement.

You’ll work closely with the potluck team on interfaces, flows, and visual language that hold up across many projects, orgs, and time zones.

You will

• Support design for frontend web experiences across the AI Potluck—landing pages, program sites, shared workspaces, and other surfaces that help people orient and participate.
• Help shape application and product design for potluck-related tools: how contributors discover work, join sessions, share context, and follow through on cross-org collaborations.
• Contribute to a coherent visual and interaction language for the potluck—clear, credible, and open enough to host many voices without feeling like corporate DevRel.
• Work with engineering to ship: prototypes, specs, component patterns, and design reviews that unblock implementation rather than pile up in Figma.
• Design for convening, not conversion. The goal is to elevate other people’s projects and make coordination easier—not to funnel attention to a single host or product.
• Iterate from real use: workshops, working sessions, contributor onboarding flows, and whatever surfaces the potluck strategy needs next.
• Partner with the potluck team, open-source contributors, and peer institutions across the public AI ecosystem.

What we’re looking for

Required

• Strong product and UI design instincts—you can move from messy stakeholder input to clear flows, wireframes, and polished frontend work.
• Frontend fluency: comfortable specifying or implementing web UI (HTML/CSS, a modern component framework, or equivalent). You don’t have to be a full-time engineer, but you should speak their language.
• Experience designing for communities, platforms, or multi-stakeholder products—not only single-brand marketing sites or one-app SaaS.
• Taste for public-interest, civic, or open-source contexts: design that feels trustworthy, readable, and slightly under-branded on purpose.
• Working familiarity with the open-source AI landscape (models, inference, tooling, evals) or the curiosity to learn it quickly from the people you’re designing with.
• Comfort collaborating asynchronously across organizations and time zones.

Most important: intrinsic motivation.

The AI Potluck is a public-goods convening strategy. Current AI is supporting design work for the movement—not claiming ownership of it, and not building a flagship product to monetize. The compensation is a fellowship stipend, not a path to a hot startup exit. If you’re here to own a brand, build a portfolio piece for a movement product, or design your way into the protagonist role, this is the wrong role.

Nice to have

• Experience designing event, program, or fellowship experiences—not just product dashboards.
• Experience building or contributing to a design system used across multiple products or teams.
• Experience on open-source or public-goods software where the UI had to serve many maintainers, not one PM.

This is an opportunity to help define how a growing public-interest AI movement looks and feels online—at a moment when the potluck strategy is moving from idea to infrastructure. You’ll work with technologists, organizers, maintainers, and public-interest institutions who care about making open-source AI more than the sum of its repos.
