The Curie Institute Research Center
The “Institut Curie” is a major player in the research and fight against cancer. It consists of a hospital and a Research Center of more than 1000 employees with a strong international representativeness.
The objective of the Curie Institute Research Center is to develop basic research and to use the knowledge produced to improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics of cancers as part of the continuum between basic research and innovation serving the patient.
Laboratory
The 'Chemistry and Modelling for Cancer Biology' unit (UMR9187) is located at the Institut Curie research centre in Orsay. It is an interdisciplinary unit dedicated to designing and synthesising molecular probes and anti-cancer drug candidates and studying their mechanisms of action. The unit comprises 50 people and is supported by:
- three research teams.
- Two cross-disciplinary divisions (modelling and biology).
- the ‘Chimiothèque' platform, which is one of the largest in France with almost 13,000 compounds resulting from 70 years of research.
- Implement and carry out one or more synthetic methods relevant to a specific field of chemistry.
- Select appropriate synthetic techniques and develop procedures and protocols.
- Monitor the progress and results of syntheses performed.
- Conduct literature reviews on specific issues to update your knowledge.
- Develop experimental procedures and prepare reports on the results of syntheses and their interpretation.
- Monitor scientific and technological developments.
- Provide guidance on selecting and implementing synthesis methods appropriate for solving the problem at hand.
- Share knowledge and skills with doctoral and postdoctoral students.
- Supervise and lead a team.
- Receive training and stay informed about chemical hazards.
- Apply and enforce health and safety rules, including any updates.
Candidate Profile
Training and experience required
- Master's degree in Chemistry
- Desired professional experience: One to two years' experience in a synthetic chemistry laboratory.
Knowledge
- Chemistry (in-depth knowledge)
- Techniques for developing a family of molecules (in-depth knowledge).
- Methods for purifying and identifying molecules or chemical species (general knowledge).
- Synthesized molecules (basic concepts)
- Professional environment and networks
- Organization and operation of higher education and public research
- Intellectual Property Law
Desired operational skills
- Apply at least one chemical synthesis technique with proficiency.
- Use software to interpret results.
- Use software to draw chemical compounds.
- Follow health and safety guidelines.

- English proficiency: B1 to B2
