About The Role

About the Position This position is located at the Department of Cultural Geography and Economic Geography and is attached to SESAC – the Swedish Competence Centre for Satellite Enabled Social Science Analytics. SESAC is funded by the Swedish Space Agency and hosted by Lund University in collaboration with Chalmers, Linköping University, and Karlstad University. Its mission is to make satellite and Earth observation data accessible and useful for social science research in sustainability, public health, urbanization, population dynamics, and crisis preparedness—and to build bridges between academia, public authorities, industry, and civil society. You will work in a small, interdisciplinary environment where cultural geographers, physical geographers, remote sensing experts, and data scientists collaborate across four universities. As the centre’s operational hub, you will coordinate practical and administrative tasks closely with the Director and Principal Investigators (PIs), and be physically based in Lund. Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Planning and implementing centre activities—conferences, workshops, courses, webinars, and hackathons—from invitations, registrations, and logistics to budgeting, execution, and evaluation
• Coordinating collaboration across the four universities: scheduling meetings, preparing agendas and background materials, documenting decisions, and following up implementation
• Structuring the centre’s ongoing work with timelines, project overviews, and deadlines, and contributing to reporting to funders
• Supporting the PI in daily operations with background material, presentations, and summaries
• Managing parts of the centre’s external communication, e.g., website, newsletters, and social media
• Serving as the contact person for partners, visiting researchers, and guests
• Compiling, processing, and quality-assuring satellite and geospatial data, and producing maps and visualizations
• Contributing to documentation of data, code, and workflows to ensure openness and reusability
• Developing and maintaining teaching and demonstration materials for courses and webinars
• The position includes domestic travel within Sweden and occasional international travel.

Qualifications Required

• Master’s degree in cultural geography, physical geography, GIS/remote sensing, data science, a social science discipline with a quantitative focus, or another field relevant to the position
• Documented experience independently planning and implementing events such as conferences, workshops, courses, or seminars
• Experience structuring and coordinating work in multi-partner projects, including scheduling, documentation, and follow-up
• Solid knowledge of GIS and/or remote sensing (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, or Google Earth Engine)
• Experience programming in Python and/or R for data processing and analysis
• Excellent proficiency in both Swedish and English, both spoken and written
• Strong collaborative skills, as well as the ability to work independently, systematically, and carefully, and to take initiative
• Meritorious Experience working in a university or research environment (e.g., research administration or project finance)
• Experience with externally funded research projects and reporting to funders
• Experience working with Copernicus/Sentinel, Landsat, or high-resolution satellite data
• Experience with machine learning or AI applied to image data
• Experience with version control (Git), reproducible workflows, and cloud-based data processing
• Experience with scientific communication, web publishing, or editorial work for newsletters and social media
• Experience with international collaborations
• Swedish driver’s license class B

Additional Information

This is a special fixed-term position at 100% for one year, with start date as soon as possible or by mutual agreement. Interviews are planned to be held at our premises in Lund during weeks 39/40.
