This position is that of a professeur des universités and is advertised as part of the competitive examinations for the recruitment of tenured faculty run by Université Grenoble Alpes.

Context and educational objectives:

The IM²AG Department training programmes cover a very wide range of fields from computer science to fundamental mathematics, as well as fields at the crossroads of disciplines (cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, operational research, modelling, optimisation, etc.). The courses are under the responsibility of three teaching shcoolss: Computer Science, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The Applied Mathematics teaching school which will be the reference school for the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will teach general mathematics, analysis, algebra, probability and statistics and/or numerical methods, at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.

They could be involved in one of the CMA projects (Compétences et métiers d’avenir (skills and professions of the future)) in which IM²AG is involved, in particular the verIT project, but this is only one example.

They could also become involved in cross-disciplinary teaching related to socio-environmental and sustainability issues (combining exact sciences with humanities and social sciences), or even coordinate them. The need for this will increase over the next few years (with, for example, the aim of all students taking such a course in year 1 or 2 at bachelor’s level).

At Master's level, many courses in analysis, modelling, optimisation, statistical learning, etc. require the ability to teach in English.

Research project and scientific impact:

The acceleration of various forms of environmental degradation and the increasing scarcity of certain resources are weakening or even threatening our societies. Modelling, analysing and assessing the sustainability of these societies, as well as designing transitions towards sustainable socio-technical organisations, requires systemic approaches. Systemic approaches are necessary to represent the various interactions between society and the environment appropriately, to better capture the systemic nature of risks (in particular the cascading effects of risks due to the interconnections of the society-environment system), or to make the best-informed foresight in order to fuel ecological transitions of territories or countries. A few examples of research themes are given below.

• Society-environment interactions (e.g. interdependencies between economy / energy / resources).
• Economy of a territory (e.g. in terms of biophysical flows, of the network of stakeholders, institutions, etc.).
• Systemic risks, on a global or regional scale (e.g. dynamic systems approaches).
• Design, description and evaluation of socio-technical organisations.

It is expected that the successful candidate will carry out this research or research-actions in direct interaction with public players in the field of transitions (typically, local authorities or agencies such as ADEME, AURA-EE, etc.; the host laboratory already has a good network of collaborations in this area).

Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high‑level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.

• Applicants must have obtained a PR qualification CNU . Those who belong to one of the following categories are exempted from this requirement:
  • Tenured senior lecturer in France ( maîtres de conférences titulaires )
  • Applicants who have held a professor position in a foreign higher education institution in the 18 months prior to their application. They must provide an official proof, such as a contract, or a certificate from their employer indicating position and contract dates. Université Grenoble Alpes will assess the comparability of their duties with that of a professeur des universités .
