Principal Scientist – Crystallization & Particle Engineering
Location: Montpellier, France
We are looking for an experienced scientist to lead our Crystallization & Particle Engineering Laboratory, driving innovative projects across Sanofi’s small‑molecule portfolio from early‑stage discovery all the way to commercialization.
Responsibilities
- Define and implement the laboratory’s scientific strategy in crystallization and particle engineering for small‑molecule APIs and drug products across development stages.
- Develop and optimize innovative crystallization processes (batch, continuous, reactive) and push technological boundaries for complex small molecules.
- Explore and apply new particle‑engineering techniques (spray drying, milling, granulation, hot‑melt extrusion, etc.) and leverage modeling/simulation to predict crystallization behavior.
- Identify and evaluate polymorphs and crystalline forms, optimizing bio‑availability and manufacturability.
- Apply QbD and PAT principles from discovery through commercialization; scout and integrate new technologies to maintain competitive advantage.
- Lead the seamless technology transfer of processes from early development to large‑scale production, collaborating with production teams and ensuring GMP and quality documentation.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (Formulation, Analytical Sciences, Chemical Development, Manufacturing) and provide scientific expertise in project meetings and strategic committees.
- Represent the laboratory at scientific conferences, contributing to publications and patents.
- Lead and develop a team of 3‑5 scientists/engineers, conduct annual reviews, and manage laboratory budget and resources.
- Ensure compliance with EHS standards, GMP guidelines, and maintain state‑of‑the‑art scientific equipment.
Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related field.
- Solid expertise in crystallization, solid‑state chemistry, or particle engineering for small molecules.
- In‑depth experience with crystallization process development and polymorphism across early and late stage development.
- Advanced mastery of particle‑engineering technologies (spray drying, milling, granulation, etc.).
- Confirmed experience in QbD, PAT, and process optimization.
- Experience leading scientific teams and fostering innovation.
- Excellent scientific communication skills and collaborative mindset.
- Fluency in English and French.
- Scientific publications and/or patents in the field (highly desired).
Benefits
- Competitive fixed salary (€54400–€72533) plus profit‑sharing and incentive bonuses based on group results.
- 31days paid leave plus RTT days; remote work up to 2days/week.
- Health insurance, public transportation coverage up to 80%, maternity and child‑welcoming leave.
- Retirement plans with employer contributions, savings plan, and works‑council benefits.
- Internal and international mobility opportunities and a customizable training program.
- Access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities and cutting‑edge scientific equipment.
