Key Purpose of the Job
The Portfolio Manager will support the Portfolio Management and Underwriting teams, with a strong focus on underwriting support, AI tool enablement, workflow improvement, and portfolio coordination.
The role will help underwriters work more efficiently by supporting submission handling process, AI-assisted activities, process guidance, Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs), class framework activities, and underwriting governance.
The role will support reporting, management information, and data-related analysis focused on underwriting performance, including responding to ad-hoc requests and providing timely insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Support underwriting teams with day-to-day portfolio and underwriting activities, ensuring they have access to the information, tools, and guidance needed to achieve their goals.
- Act as a super-user of AI tools, supporting underwriters with AI-assisted summaries, draft outputs, submission triage, workflow support, and adoption of new tools and ways of working.
- Liaise with underwriters and key stakeholders to understand business needs, gather feedback on AI tools and underwriting processes, and help improve service delivery across the business.
- Support class framework activities, including maintaining documentation, templates, agreed standards, and coordinating inputs from underwriting and portfolio stakeholders.
- Support Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) by gathering inputs, preparing standard MI packs and commentary, and tracking actions and follow-ups.
- Support underwriting governance routines by preparing materials for governance forums, maintaining logs, tracking actions and decisions, and ensuring outputs are distributed on time.
- Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as operations, finance, actuarial, UWG, other business units, and overseas offices to improve product line or divisional performance and efficiency.
- Facilitate workshops and meetings to communicate updates, gather input, and support implementation of AI tools, process improvements, and underwriting initiatives.
- Support change management as AI tools and improved workflows are introduced, helping teams adapt to new systems, controls, and processes.
- Respond to ad-hoc requests from internal teams and stakeholders, including underwriting support requests, QBR inputs, governance actions, and portfolio-related analysis, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
- Assist in producing high-quality reports and management information to support business objectives, underwriting reviews, and compliance requirements.
- Maintain and improve standard reporting and MI outputs, mainly in Excel, and support dashboard enhancements where required.
- Support the integration and use of relevant data sources and contribute to process improvements in reporting, workflow management, and automation.
- Participate in the development and enhancement of processes related to underwriting workflow, MI production, reporting, and automation, including use of AI tools where appropriate.
- Representation of LoB interests at meetings as required.
- Liaise with all Portfolio Managers to ensure consistency, best practice, and effective collaboration across teams.
Skills and Experience
- Strong understanding of insurance underwriting workflows and portfolio management concepts, including submission intake, triage, referrals, documentation, and performance monitoring.
- Strong ability to support underwriting teams in a practical and organised way, with a service-focused mindset and good attention to detail.
- Super-user capability with AI assistants and GenAI tools, including strong prompt‑writing, iteration, output review, and validation skills.
- Good understanding of AI risks and limitations, including hallucinations, bias, confidentiality, and responsible use in underwriting processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and work effectively with underwriters and other business teams.
- Supporting or coordinating QBRs, class framework activities, governance routines, or similar business management processes is preferred.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, filtering, and basic data cleansing. Familiarity with Power BI or similar visualisation tools is beneficial.
- Ability to produce clear MI, commentary, and business updates for underwriting and portfolio review purposes.
- Organised and proactive, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment and support change across teams.
- Interest in process improvement, workflow optimisation, and practical automation, including working with AI, templates, and workflow tools.
- Good understanding of data and reporting processes. Familiarity with SQL, relational databases, Python, or similar analytical tools would be beneficial but is not essential.
- Fluency in English is required. Additional European languages are beneficial but not essential.
