POLICE: 911 Telecommunicator I

The dispatch center operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Applicants must work all shifts, type at 40 wpm, pass a comprehensive background check and polygraph examination, and possess strong multi‑tasking skills. A 2‑hour pre‑skills test will be administered to all qualified candidates; no prior experience is required. High School Diploma or GED is required.

General Description of Position

Receive incident reports, including emergency calls through 911, and simultaneously enter information into the computer. Operate public‑safety dispatching equipment as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answer and respond appropriately to incoming public assistance and 911 emergency calls from the general public, private alarm companies, etc., allocating about 10% of workload.
  • Determine calmly and effectively critical information for processing a call, allocating about 10% of workload.
  • Enter and code information into the computer while simultaneously receiving information from callers, allocating about 10% of workload.
  • Determine which agencies need to respond, operate dispatching equipment to dispatch fire or police vehicles and personnel, and transfer caller information to appropriate agencies, allocating about 10% of workload.
  • Interface with the ACIC system to input data and obtain information on driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations, warrants, etc., as required; allocating about 10% of workload.
  • Set priority of calls based on policy and nature of incident.
  • Maintain status of personnel and equipment already out on calls while dispatching.
  • Secure assistance of other agencies as needed, allocating about 7% of workload.
  • Stay current on specific crime problems, unusual fire and police operations that must be considered when dispatching, allocating about 5% of workload.
  • Read and interpret resource materials and procedural manuals, allocating about 5% of workload.
  • Utilize appropriate equipment such as computer, two‑way radio, and related dispatch and recording equipment.
  • Conduct minor tests and inspections on equipment weekly.
  • Perform minor office functions such as filing, copying and sorting.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Equivalent to four years of high school or GED, with emphasis on office skills, shop skills, or related areas. 0–6 months related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person‑to‑person and small group settings with customers, clients, general public, and other employees.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent; and interpret bar graphs.

Critical Thinking Skills: Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret written, oral, or diagram instructions.

Required Certifications: Must acquire and maintain ACIC Level I and Level II Certification within one year of hire; must also maintain CPR, Emergency Medical Dispatch, and Telecommunicator certifications.

Preferred Certifications: None indicated.

Software Skills: Intermediate: Alphanumeric data entry, contact management, word processing/typing. Basic: Database, spreadsheet.
