A major focus of the research team is on evaluation of the importance of platelet glycoprotein VI (GPVI) as a safe, innovative antithrombotic target to improve outcome after acute ischaemic stroke, with a focus on thrombo inflammation during reperfusion. Work spans experimental stroke models, advanced histology, flow cytometry and microfluidics to dissect platelet–leukocyte–endothelium interactions in the ischaemic brain.
Current projects investigate how human GPVI aggravates cerebral lesions by driving neutrophil and monocyte recruitment, edema and microvascular dysfunction, and how pharmacological GPVI inhibition with glenzocimab reduces ischemic damage without increasing bleeding. Clinical translation builds on ACTIMIS/ACTISAVE trials to characterise safety, haemorrhagic risk and functional outcomes when GPVI inhibition is added to thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
A postdoctoral project could focus on mapping GPVI dependent thrombo inflammatory pathways (e.g. platelet–neutrophil aggregates, NETs, endothelial activation) and identifying biomarkers or imaging and blood signatures predicting which fully recanalised patients benefit most from GPVI inhibition.
Who can apply?
Researchers of any nationality who:
- Have completed a PhD or will complete it at the date of the call deadline (September 2026).
- Have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research at the time of the call deadline.
