.Physics is currently undergoing a major renaissance thanks to the exploration of extreme conditions – pressure, temperature, magnetic fields and timescales. In condensed matter physics, for example, these conditions reveal previously unknown quantum phases and emergent properties of matter. Furthermore, the development of new ultra-sensitive detectors and sensors has a significant impact in other fields, such as astrophysics and experimental cosmology, to name but a few.The study of these phenomena relies on experiments capable of operating in demanding environments, where measurement precision and device stability are crucial. In this context, a CNRS Junior Professor Chair 'Physics and Instrumentation under Extreme Conditions' (EPIC) would strengthen the interface between fundamental physics, instrumentation engineering, and materials science. It would stimulate the emergence of new experimental approaches to probe phases of matter and regimes that remain largely unexplored.This Junior Professor Chair would also play a structuring role by bringing together national expertise and developing benchmark instrumental platforms, within laboratories or at major research infrastructures. Finally, it would help to perpetuate the French tradition of researchers who master both fundamental concepts and cutting-edge experimental developments.

The four laboratories that may host the laureate of the chair are: the Néel Institute in Grenoble ; the National Laboratory for Intense Magnetic Fields in Grenoble and Toulouse ; the Laboratory of Solid State Physics in Orsay ; the Institute of Mineralogy, Materials Physics, and Cosmo-chemistry in Paris . These four laboratories are international leaders in the fields covered by the EPIC Junior Professor Chair, with a well-established tradition of interdisciplinary projects. It is strongly recommended to contact your prospective host laboratory as soon as the call for applications is published.

Although open to a wide range of topics, the candidates must propose a research project in line with the priorities of one of the four host laboratories: Institut Néel in Grenoble, LNCMI in Grenoble and Toulouse, LPS in Orsay, and IMPMC in Paris. The research project must demonstrate its originality and its ability to address the challenges of physics under extreme conditions by proposing new methodological and instrumental approaches.

Candidates must propose a teaching project (28 hours of lectures or 42 hours of laboratory or tutorial work) related to the broad themes of the EPIC Junior Professor Chair. This teaching project will then be discussed and finalized with the university supervising the laboratory to which the successful candidate is assigned.

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project's socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
