Position Overview

The Sports League Manager is an essential operations role within the Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for the planning, coordination, and supervision of assigned youth and adult sports league programs, tournaments, and special events. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Recreation and is a non‑exempt, safety‑insensitive role requiring work on alternative schedules, including nights and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and manage assigned youth and adult sports leagues, tournaments, and special events.
  • Coordinate scheduling of games, practices, tournaments, and facility usage for athletic fields and courts.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise officials and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with staff on tournament operations including team registration, scheduling, event coordination, and on‑site management.
  • Manage day‑to‑day league operations, including team registration, roster organization, coordination of officials and volunteer coaches, records administration, customer engagement, and conflict resolution.
  • Ensure athletic facilities, fields, and courts are prepared, safe, and maintained; conduct site inspections and address safety or operational concerns.
  • Address and resolve participant, parent, and coach concerns in a professional and timely manner.
  • Monitor games and activities to ensure compliance with league rules, safety standards, department policies, and city ordinances.
  • Assist with program budgets, purchasing, and tracking program revenues and expenses.
  • Maintain accurate program records, participation data, and reports; manage equipment inventory and ordering of uniforms and equipment.
  • Utilize recreation management software and other technology systems to support scheduling, team building, communications, and program administration.
  • Assist the Marketing team in promoting programs and events through community outreach, marketing efforts, and social media.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and other city departments to support league programming and increase participant and volunteer involvement.
  • Assist with the development of new programs and special events to meet community recreation needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Fiscal Responsibilities

Annual budget total value: $25,000.Funds, facilities & equipment total value: $100,000.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises a small group (3-7) of employees; assigns and checks work, provides instruction, and performs the work as required.
  • Occasionally responsible for organization property with moderate potential loss; total value ranges from $5,000 to $150,000.

Education and Experience

  • Four‑year college degree or equivalent experience in a related field (e.g., accounting, marketing, business administration, agriculture).
  • General experience: 3 years related experience and/or training.
  • Management experience: 19 to 23 months related management experience.

  • Analytical Ability/Problem Solving: Moderately structured.
  • Planning: Considerable responsibility for planning, timing, method, approach, and execution.
  • Decision Making: Frequent opportunities for minor and major decisions affecting the organization.
  • Accuracy: Moderately significant errors could affect operational efficiency.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and understand general business articles; speak effectively before groups.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to use basic arithmetic, rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret graphs.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: Use common sense to follow written, oral, or diagrammed instructions; manage routine problems.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • CPR/AED certification – Preferred.

  • Contacts with employees: Coordination with department or office staff; requires tact in problem discussion and recommendations.
  • Contacts with public: Regular interactions with patrons, providing information and influencing decisions.
