Paralegal I (S)

Office of State Human Resources, Temporary Solutions. Grade: LG03.

Location: 114 W Edenton St, Wake County; Department of Justice.

Hourly rate: $23.45 (based on education and/or years of relevant experience).

Benefits: Temporary employees working an average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for Health‑Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) coverage. No leave or retirement benefits are provided.

Management Preferences

Must be able to handle a high‑volume caseload and possess effective multitasking skills. Provide complex litigation support to attorneys primarily working in the North Carolina Industrial Commission.

Job Duties

  • Prepare legal documents.
  • Determine, locate, and organize exhibits.
  • Locate and interview witnesses to determine their availability, testimony, and its value in a court hearing.
  • Coordinate depositions of key witnesses.
  • Compile information and documents to prepare responsive pleadings and respond to discovery requests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of case, statutory and common law; judicial and quasi‑judicial procedures and the rules of evidence; and the program area or legal specialty assigned. Capable of performing legal research, investigatory work, summarizing facts and evidence, and preparing legal documents including responsive pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses. Able to communicate clearly and logically in oral and written form; utilize technology in research and writing assignments; create spreadsheets for data capture and analysis; and maintain effective working relationships with persons contacted during work.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training; or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma with five years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
