Job Description

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Athletic Training Services, the outreach athletic trainer oversees day-to-day medical coverage in collegiate and/or professional sports settings. The candidate will have experience with injury prevention, human movement correction, and contribute to developing the next generation of professional footballers. Responsibilities include standard immediate care procedures in emergencies, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning. Use assessment outcome measures to determine effectiveness of the outreach program and determine return-to-play criteria for student-athletes and active populations. Manage head injuries and concussions; refer to appropriate medical professionals to ensure optimal care, under supervision of a directing physician. Collaborate with the Sports Medicine Team to ensure service excellence for all customers of the athletic training outreach program.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide athletic training services to collegiate and/or professional sport events as needed to meet departmental goals.
  • Work within the Sports Medicine Team concept and assist with event coverage.
  • Provide acute medical care to athletes on the field during practices or events.
  • Provide clinical athletic training services in local orthopedic clinics as necessary.
  • Provide on-site recognition, evaluation, and immediate care procedures for illnesses and injuries in various settings.
  • Perform clinical injury evaluation and assess patient function using standard clinical practices in diagnostic reasoning and medical decision making.
  • Determine therapeutic treatment, rehabilitation strategies, and taping/wrapping and bracing for preventative and protective care.
  • Implement treatment program objectives with long- and short-term goals and measure effectiveness of the program.
  • Collaborate with the directing physician; recommend discontinuation of athletic training services when optimal benefit is achieved and document final patient status.
  • Determine return-to-play standards for injuries.
  • Maintain daily treatment logs, injury reports, doctor referrals, and medical inventory per clinic standards.
  • Prepare practice and game setups including medical supplies and equipment for adequate coverage.
  • Assist with planning, organizing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with departmental policies.
  • Ensure an Emergency Action Plan for each venue and coordinate with the school’s Athletic Director, coaches, and athletes, including local EMS.
  • Assist with preparation of lectures and sports medicine programs; serve as a presenter when needed.
  • Mentor and manage on-site education of students and other healthcare professionals at outreach events (if applicable).
  • Ensure athletic training room sites have appropriate supplies and equipment; recommend new equipment for acquisition and use by the organization.
  • Develop physician referral networks including family practice, orthopedic, physical therapy, and other specialties as needed.
  • Facilitate patient entry into the healthcare system and document referrals.
  • Maintain training on concussion education, management, and care, including acute cervical spine management.
  • Adhere to departmental dress code when providing on-site athletic training services.
  • Perform other related clinical duties as required by state regulations and athletic training statutes and rules.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from a CAATE-accredited program.
  • Certification / License: Current BOC certification; active or eligible state license; ability to complete American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS) including CPR and AED within 30 days of hire.
  • Work Experience: Experience as a BOC-Certified Athletic Trainer preferred; ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, independent work capability, communication across diverse stakeholders, confidentiality (FERPA/HIPAA), medical terminology, teamwork, and reception of diverse populations.

  • Ability to work within the Sports Medicine Team and accept assignments based on department needs.
  • Initiate problem-solving and conflict-resolution to foster effective work relationships.
  • Maintain competencies for the position and unit/area assignment.
  • Ability to work well with all ages and backgrounds; identify social work resources for athletes who are uninsured or underinsured.
  • Excellent oral and written communication; relay information professionally to coaches, physicians, administration, families, and healthcare team.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Set hours may vary; some night and weekend work required.
  • On-site coverage in high school athletic training rooms.
  • Ability to manage a stressful environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Athletic fields may be noisy, hectic, and stressful; situational awareness may be necessary.
  • Possible exposure to infections and contagious diseases; emergency/crisis situations may occur.
