Level Artist – Lyon, France

Arkane Studios is seeking a world‑class Level Artist to collaborate closely with Level Designers and Environment Artists to design and build immersive game levels.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with Level Designers to design and build levels, ensuring gameplay and 3‑D space function harmoniously.
  • Collaborate with Environment Artists to integrate textures, models, and lighting.
  • Propose visual references and design concepts for game locations.
  • Develop modular architecture systems and assemble levels using provided assets.
  • Produce additional 3‑D environmental assets if required.
  • Apply basic lighting techniques and optimize levels for performance.
  • Utilize the game engine efficiently to produce maps that run smoothly on consoles.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Level Artist and Level Art Director to maintain artistic unity.
  • Travel to the studio as needed, limited to less than 10% of time.

Requirements

  • Sensitivity for architectural spaces, volume, circulation, lighting, detail distribution, and image composition.
  • 2+ years of experience in the game industry or significant modding experience.
  • Proficient in at least one 3‑D software such as Maya.
  • Proficient in at least one game editor such as Unreal Engine, Source, or CryEngine.
  • Ability to identify and support gameplay needs within level design.
  • Experience with modular construction methods related to design, memory, and performance.
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated, energetic team player with a strong work ethic.
  • Passion for games.
  • Knowledge of basic lighting concepts is desired.
  • Experience in photography, cinema, or related domains is a plus.
  • Portfolio of relevant work samples.

Level Designer – Lyon, France

Arkane Studios is looking for Level Designers to produce level design documentation, create layouts, script gameplay events, and work closely with art and development teams.

Responsibilities

  • Create level design documentation, including mission intentions and high‑level concepts.
  • Develop level layouts and simplified geometry with Level Artists and Architects.
  • Implement gameplay events such as enemy encounters and narrative scenes using in‑house tools.
  • Ensure technical compliance across all platforms and regularly verify functionality.
  • Collaborate with the art department and all game disciplines throughout level iterations.
  • Identify and fix level design bugs.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of the game‑design philosophy behind action‑adventure stealth titles such as Dishonored series.
  • Adherence to the systemic design philosophy.
  • Knowledge of player psychology.
  • Experience with proprietary editing packages and scripting (Kismet, Lua, etc.).
  • Familiarity with version control (Perforce) and bug tracking databases.
  • Quality‑oriented with strong communication skills.
