Nuclear Safety Engineer, Fuel Conversion & ten-year Safety Review
The Institut Laue‑Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world and hosts over 2000 visits by scientists per year.
Responsibilities
- Draft sections of the safety review report and the technical compliance report.
- Review and classify documents providing evidence of technical compliance.
- Oversee on‑site inspections of key safety components (mechanical, civil engineering, etc.).
- Place orders and monitor subcontracted compliance inspections in the field.
- Implement a methodology to address the impacts of ageing and warming climate.
- Monitor the ASNR's review of the high‑flux reactor fuel‑change file (conversion).
- Answer the ASNR's questions about the safety re‑examination file.
- Prepare nuclear safety review analyses for the High‑Flux Reactor in all areas of risk covered by the French regulations governing basic nuclear facilities (INBs) – control of the three main safety functions, studies of internal and external hazards.
- Update the safety documentation (Safety Report, Fire Risk Assessment, General Operating Rules, etc.).
Qualifications
- Master's degree (or equivalent qualification), specialising in general or nuclear engineering.
- 3 to 6 years of experience in nuclear safety, ideally in safety reviews.
- Knowledge of the nuclear sector and its design, manufacturing and operating standards and French regulations.
- Excellent writing skills; meticulous, methodical and efficient.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders, with an inquiring mind and questioning attitude essential to safety culture.
- Sound knowledge of French to communicate effectively with French nuclear safety authorities.
