Renaissance Fusion is the first Magnetic Confinement Fusion company in the EU.

We are building the first net-energy producing stellarator by combining proprietary innovations in the manufacturing of next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets and liquid metal (LM) walls.

In addition, these technologies can find applications in several other industries, including medical imaging, energy storage and big science. We are forming a team of the smartest, most driven engineers and business persons to realize and commercialize our non-fusion products within 2 years and our fusion solutions within 10 years.

Our team is young, agile, international and based in the exciting city of Grenoble, by the French Alps.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a talented, energetic, and creative nuclear safety engineer with a proven track record in delivering safety guidelines for the design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. As a member of the interdisciplinary Stellarator Engineering Team (STEN) you will join an expanding group focusing on the design and evaluation of safety critical systems/operations, building knowledge regarding nuclear safety regulations and documentation for stellarator experimental devices (Chartreuse X) and power plant (Chartreuse P).

Responsibilities

Individual responsibilities:

  • Perform studies to demonstrate the safety of fusion experimental installations.
  • Conduct safety case studies such as HAZID assessments, Qualitative and Quantitative Hazard assessments, Radiological Hazard assessments, Hazardous Materials Handling, Probabilistic Safety and Risk assessments, Fault Occurrence and Mitigation assessments, etc.
  • Create and maintain safety documents: Safety operations, Design Authority technical reports, Genertic Site Safety Reports, Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) documents, Technical Safety Requirement (TSR) documents, National and International Regulatory frameworks, etc.
  • Apply fundamental safety principles (ALARA, Defence-in-depth, passive safety, etc.) to support the design, operation, maintenance, and regulations for nuclear systems and components.

Responsibilities as a team member:

  • Support engineering, operations, maintenance and transportation projects with safety advice, guidelines and analyses.
  • Interact with the stellarator engineering team on the design, sizing, and evaluation of components of the power plant systems.
  • Interact with the liquid metal team and high temperature superconductor design team on the choice of materials and safety guidelines.

Qualifications – Essential

  • Degree in Nuclear/Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Master’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of work experience.
  • Work experience in the field of nuclear safety engineering, preferably with diverse applications to fusion experiments, radiation protection, remote handling and/or management of radwaste.
  • Strong background in safety case production and hazard analysis.
  • Knowledge of French nuclear regulations, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to apply safety standards, principles for the design, classification, and qualification of mechanical components for nuclear applications.
  • Written and oral communication skills. Ability to explain complicated concepts clearly and concisely, and critique ideas.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, curiosity and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Knowledge of various nuclear codes and standards such as the IAEA –TECDOC – 1851 Integrated Approach to Safety Classification of Mechanical Components for Fusion Applications.
  • Knowledge of US and French nuclear licensing process.
  • Experience in the implementation and optimization of remote maintenance systems through testing, commissioning and/or direct usage.
  • Experience in the installation, integration and/or commissioning of complex engineering plant systems.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with magnetic confinement fusion, and nuclear fusion technologies.
