The CNRS conducts fundamental research for the benefit of society and has identified energy transition and sustainability as key scientific priorities. The CNRS also leads the Climate, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Society Agency, where interdisciplinarity plays a significant role. In this context, CNRS Engineering aims to strengthen expert communities in the field of new energy carriers for carbon-free transportation, sustainability, and energy sovereignty. The CPJ will enable upstream scientific advancement in the field of hydrogen applications, new sustainable fuels, and ammonia. The chair will be part of a continuum of upstream research/ commercialization, and innovation led by the organization, within one of the proposed host laboratories.

The three targeted research units conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of mechanics, materials, and interfaces. Their multidisciplinary activities focus on understanding and modeling the macroscopic and microscopic properties of materials and structures, including phenomena at the smallest scales, and the physical chemistry of interfaces. Their expertise in instrumentation and metrology, along with first-class experimental platforms, supports this research. Their strategy is particularly focused on addressing challenges related to energy, decarbonization, the environment, and sustainability.

The CPJ addresses the new challenges posed by the storage and use of new energy carriers, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels. These compounds, particularly H₂, impose strong design constraints on the materials used for their containment, such as low temperatures and high pressures, which give rise to fluid-material interactions that need to be characterized and modeled. This requires a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing physical chemistry at small-scales, such as corrosion issues, fluid-wall interactions, mechanics at both microscopic and macroscopic scales regarding the strength and durability of container materials in relation to their microstructure, and the coupling between diffusion of species, fluid and mechanics of materials... The CPJ thus aims to develop expertise in the challenges posed by the intensive use of new energy sources, using methodologies that include modeling, simulation, and experimental characterization.

The candidate will join the educational programs at the relevant campus to teach courses related to their research topics, for a maximum of 42 hours. This will primarily involve research-based education, in the form of research projects or guest lectures in the campus's master's programs. Integration into these programs will be coordinated with the institutions involved, including the University of Poitiers, ISAE-ENSMA, Arts et Métiers, or Sorbonne Paris Nord University.

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project's socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
