Maintenance Specialist
Overview

Under general supervision, you will maintain and repair developed park grounds, retention basins, roadsides, buildings, playgrounds, infrastructures, and landscaping areas for the City of San Luis and other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, develop and repair parks, basins, parkways, medians, trees, recreational and park facilities, and other landscaped areas at the City’s parks, streets and related infrastructures; mows green areas and sport fields, trims trees and bushes, removes litter and debris.
- Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance tasks at City facilities, parks, roadsides and landscaped areas; duties may vary according to job assignment and individual skills.
- Perform maintenance and repairs within scope of authority and training and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations; performs traffic control and other similar duties as directed.
- Transport and operate power tools and other grounds maintenance construction equipment; maintains and improves grounds at City facilities; cleans up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner and according to procedures.
- Set up and tears down equipment and facilities for special events; sets up sports facilities and adjacent areas for tournaments, league play and sporting events.
- Identify, correct and report ground maintenance, landscaping and horticultural problems.
- Inspect and identify problems with irrigation and sprinkler systems, pipelines and maintenance equipment; installs, adjust and maintains irrigation control systems.
- Follow and enforce all safety rules and regulations to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of the work zones and facilities; assists with training staff on work skills and safety standards.
- Support the relationship between the City and the citizens of San Luis by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with San Luis citizens, visitors, City staff and co-workers; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and complies with all City policies and procedures.
- May oversee community service workers and coordinate activities.
- Monitor grounds during special events to insure protection of system.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge
- Irrigation systems installation and repairs; valves, timers, sprinklers and irrigation pipe lines.
- Operation of hand tools and equipment.
- The care of trees and plants and grass.
- Summer and winter seeding and fertilizing.
- Managing time and resources effectively.
- Occupational hazards and safety procedures.
- Operation of a wide range of tractors and other specialized equipment used in this type of work.
- Performing assigned work independently with minimal supervision.
- City policies and procedures.
Abilities
- Operate hand and power tools and construction equipment for construction/maintenance/repair.
- Perform manual labor tasks which may include heavy lifting.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Follow established safety procedures in the performance of duties.
- Perform operator-level service and maintenance of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interacting with the public.
- Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
Education, Training, and Experience
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent AND
- Education and/or experience equivalent to three (3) years of full-time journey-level equipment operation, construction, and/or road repair/maintenance work.
Licenses and Certifications
- All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment.
- A valid Arizona Driver’s License at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment.
Special Requirements
- Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
Desired/Preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- San Luis residency.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
The employee works in an outside environment subject to extreme heat, dust, noise, etc. Certain positions within the classification may require availability to work flexible schedule.
