Freelance Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical) – France
Location: Multiple automated warehouse/logistics sites across France.
About the Role
We are looking for experienced Freelance Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineers to support high-volume, highly automated distribution and fulfilment centres in France. These sites operate cutting-edge material handling equipment, including extensive conveyor networks, sortation systems, ASRS (Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems), and robotics, and rely on skilled engineers to keep operations running around the clock.
This is a hands-on role suited to engineers who thrive in a fast-paced, technically demanding environment and are comfortable working independently or as part of a wider maintenance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) on conveyor systems, sortation equipment, packing machinery, and associated automation
- Respond to and resolve reactive breakdowns quickly to minimise downtime, working to agreed SLAs
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults across control panels, motors, drives, sensors, and cabling
- Diagnose and repair mechanical faults including belts, rollers, gearboxes, bearings, chains, and pneumatic systems
- Interface with and troubleshoot PLC-controlled systems (fault-finding and diagnostics, Siemens, Allen Bradley, Schneider, or similar)
- Support commissioning, calibration, and optimisation of automated equipment
- Complete maintenance records, permits to work, and CMMS job logs accurately and on time
- Work safely within a live automated warehouse environment, following lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and site safety procedures
- Liaise with site engineering leads, controls engineers, and operations teams to prioritise work
Skills & Experience Required
- Recognised qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Multi-Skilled Engineering (BTS, Bac Pro, DUT, or equivalent)
- Proven experience maintaining automated/high-speed conveyor systems within a warehouse, logistics, FMCG, or manufacturing environment
- Working knowledge of PLC systems, able to interpret fault codes and carry out basic diagnostics (programming experience an advantage, not essential)
- Solid understanding of industrial electrical systems (low voltage, three-phase, control circuits) and mechanical systems (motors, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics)
- Experience with sortation systems, ASRS, robotics, or pallet handling equipment is highly desirable
- Comfortable working at height and in a fast-paced, live production environment
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure
- Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights and weekends, across various sites
- Good level of French preferred; English useful for international teams
