Magnetic Symmetry and Scattering Benchmark Specialist

IXO is developing physics evaluations that require the theory and the evidence to agree. This track concentrates on magnetic order: how a structure is classified, what scattering should reveal, and whether observed optical effects support the proposed physical explanation.

Work you will do

• Calculate and interpret magnetic structure factors and propagation vectors, checking whether the reasoning respects the relevant symmetry.
• Classify antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and related phases from theoretical and experimental evidence, including neutron diffraction.
• Validate magnetic-space-group assignments against MAGNDATA and the applicable BNS notation.
• Relate birefringence and magneto-optic Kerr effects to magnetic structure, explaining where an experimental signature supports or limits a conclusion.

Preferred background

• PhD or equivalent research experience in condensed-matter physics, with a magnetism specialization.
• Practical command of structure-factor calculations, propagation-vector analysis and symmetry-based phase classification.
• Direct experience with magnetic-space-group classification, MAGNDATA and BNS notation.
• Knowledge of neutron-scattering structure determination and the physical interpretation of birefringence and MOKE.

Deliverables

• Checked classifications, calculations and scientific explanations with clear links between the model, the data and any remaining ambiguity.

Pay and working terms

$85 $170/hr USD. IXO will agree the assignment scope, hourly rate, schedule and acceptance criteria before work begins.
